Quick Overview

The First Aid Only 72-Hour Emergency Preparedness Kit is a self-contained, four-person life-sustainment system that provides water, food, first aid, light, and shelter capability for up to 72 hours during disasters, power failures, or infrastructure disruptions.

This kit is organized into four operational groups: Life Support and Sustainment, Command Control and Communication, Medical and Trauma, and Shelter, Tools, and PPE. Each group addresses a distinct readiness requirement. The Life Support group includes 24 emergency food bars and 24 four-ounce water packets, rationed at two of each per person per day for the full 72-hour period. Water is designated the highest-priority consumable and is reserved strictly for hydration, not washing.

The Command, Control, and Communication group equips the operator with a hand-crank radio and integrated flashlight requiring no batteries, two light sticks providing 8 to 12 hours of illumination each, and a high-decibel whistle for audible distress signaling. The Medical and Trauma group is housed in a detachable zippered pouch designed to be transported directly to a patient without moving the entire kit. It contains wound dressing, sprain and eye treatment, antiseptic packs, scissors, tweezers, and medications including acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and antacids, with administration requiring explicit patient consent and allergy screening before use.

Deployment follows a five-step protocol: secure and assess, establish light and communications, triage and treat, establish shelter and rationing, and maintain hygiene and security. This kit is classified as a Level 1 bridge resource and is not designed for long-term survival, wilderness use, or HAZMAT incidents.

Field Application Steps

1. SECURE THE AREA AND ASSESS PERSONNEL: Immediately retrieve the Emergency Preparedness Kit and move all personnel to a structurally sound rally point away from windows. Conduct a headcount and perform a rapid verbal assessment of all four persons for injuries.

2. ESTABLISH LIGHT: If the area is dark, activate one light stick by bending the plastic tube until the inner vial snaps, then shake to distribute the chemical light. Place it in a central location to illuminate the shelter area.

3. DEPLOY THE CRANK RADIO: Extend the antenna on the crank radio and turn the hand crank for a minimum of 60 seconds to establish initial power. Tune to NOAA Weather Radio or local AM/FM emergency broadcast frequencies to gather situational intelligence and receive official instructions.

4. TRIAGE AND TREAT INJURIES: If injuries are present, detach the removable first aid pouch from the main bag and carry it directly to the injured party. Don gloves, assess the injury, and address life-threatening bleeding first, providing care only to the level of your formal training and referencing the included first aid guide as needed.

5. DISTRIBUTE SHELTER RESOURCES: Issue the emergency blanket to anyone who is cold, in shock, or injured, wrapping it reflective-side inward to retain body heat. If conditions require rain or wind protection, deploy the poncho. Activate hand warmers by opening the packet to expose contents to air and place them in pockets or gloves to counter hypothermia risk.

6. INITIATE RATIONING PROTOCOL: Brief the team on the 72-hour supply limits before any consumables are distributed. Issue the first water ration of one 4-ounce packet per person, and defer food distribution unless a team member is hypoglycemic or several hours have elapsed since the last meal.

7. ADMINISTER MEDICATION WITH CONSENT: Before administering ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or antacids to any person, obtain explicit verbal consent and screen for known allergies to the specific medication. Do not administer any medication to an unconscious or disoriented person, and adhere strictly to the dosage printed on the packaging.

8. ESTABLISH HYGIENE AND SANITATION: Designate a remote corner of the shelter area as the sanitation point and deploy the biohazard bag for all medical waste, human waste, and trash. Use hand sanitizer packets after any patient contact and before handling food.

9. MANAGE SIGNALING AND COMMUNICATIONS DISCIPLINE: Use the whistle only when you have reason to believe rescuers are in proximity, as the standard distress signal is three sharp blasts in succession. Conserve physical energy and maintain a written log of radio updates, supply consumption, and patient status throughout the operational period.
