Quick Overview

The First Aid Only 98-Piece First Responder Kit is an EMT-grade trauma and wound care system designed to provide initial stabilization of injuries ranging from minor abrasions to significant hemorrhage, used by trained responders including EMTs, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and industrial safety personnel until EMS arrives.

The kit organizes 98 components across five operational categories: PPE and scene safety, hemorrhage and trauma management, musculoskeletal injury, specialized wound care, and tools and ancillary equipment. Core hemorrhage control capability is built around the Hema-Seal 8x10 Trauma Pad with attached conforming gauze, supported by sterile gauze pads, a 12x30 inch trauma dressing, and cloth tape. The kit also includes an emergency blanket for shock mitigation, nitrile exam gloves for Body Substance Isolation, and biohazard bags for post-deployment contamination control.

Operators must understand the kit's defined capability limits before deployment. It does not contain a CoTCCC-recommended tourniquet, a vented or occlusive chest seal, or any equipment for advanced airway management, IV or IO access, or pharmaceutical administration. These are documented gaps requiring supplemental equipment when arterial hemorrhage or penetrating thoracic trauma is a likely threat profile in the operational environment.

Sustained readiness requires a full inventory and packaging integrity inspection on the first of each month and immediately following any deployment. Items with compromised sterile packaging must be discarded and replaced before the kit is returned to ready status. The kit must not be returned to service until it is fully restocked to its original 98-piece configuration, and storage temperatures must remain between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 120 degrees Fahrenheit to preserve adhesive, ointment, and cold pack efficacy.

Field Application Steps

1. SECURE THE SCENE AND DON PPE: Confirm the scene is safe before making patient contact, including verifying that any machinery involved is locked out and tagged out. Open the kit and immediately don a pair of nitrile exam gloves to establish Body Substance Isolation before touching the casualty.

2. CONDUCT INITIAL CASUALTY ASSESSMENT: Perform a rapid assessment of the casualty to identify immediate life threats before initiating any treatment. Prioritize hemorrhage as the primary life threat in trauma scenarios.

3. CONTROL MASSIVE HEMORRHAGE: Retrieve a Hema-Seal 8x10 Trauma Pad and apply it directly over the wound with firm, consistent pressure. Wrap the attached 4-inch conforming gauze roll completely around the limb to secure the pad, applying enough tension to control bleeding without functioning as a tourniquet.

4. APPLY SUPPLEMENTAL DRESSING IF NEEDED: For large-area wounds including abrasions, avulsions, or burns, deploy the Trauma Dressing 12x30 inches. The dressing can be folded to pack a large wound cavity before applying direct pressure.

5. TREAT FOR SHOCK: Recognize pale skin as an early indicator of shock and act immediately regardless of ambient temperature. Retrieve the emergency blanket, unfold it, and wrap it around the casualty covering as much of the body as possible to retain core body heat and slow shock progression.

6. CONDUCT SECONDARY SURVEY: Once hemorrhage is controlled and shock treatment is initiated, perform a systematic head-to-toe assessment for additional injuries. Use sterile gauze pads and adhesive bandages to address any minor wounds identified during the survey.

7. MANAGE MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES: For sprains, strains, or suspected fractures, apply an elastic bandage wrap to reduce swelling and provide support. Fashion a triangular bandage into a sling for upper extremity injuries, and apply a cold pack wrapped in a triangular bandage as a cloth barrier. Never apply the cold pack directly to skin.

8. MANAGE BURNS AND EYE INJURIES: Apply the water-gel burn dressing directly to thermal burns to cool tissue and prevent contamination. Do not use it on extensive burns. For eye injuries, cover the injured eye loosely, flush debris from the outer corner inward using eyewash, and do not attempt to remove any embedded objects.

9. DOCUMENT ALL INTERVENTIONS: Record the time of each intervention and the steps taken throughout the response. This documentation is critical information for the incoming EMS crew and must be ready for handoff.

10. EXECUTE EMS HANDOFF AND SCENE CLEANUP: Remove gloves using the glove-within-glove technique and consolidate all contaminated supplies, including blood-soaked dressings, wrappers, and used gloves, into a biohazard bag for disposal per local protocol. Provide the incoming EMS crew with a clear verbal handoff report covering all injuries identified and all interventions performed, including timing.
