Field Application Steps

  1. Verify scene safety, call 9-1-1, and don protective gloves.
  2. Expose the wound by cutting clothing and identify the source of life-threatening bleeding.
  3. For limbs, apply the windlass tourniquet high and tight; tighten until bleeding stops and note the time.
  4. For torso or junctional areas, pack the wound with hemostatic gauze and apply firm, direct pressure with the pressure bandage.
  5. For penetrating chest wounds, apply a chest seal to cover the wound.
  6. Cover the casualty with the emergency blanket to prevent shock and prepare to brief arriving EMS.
