- Expose the wound by cutting clothing and identify the source of life-threatening bleeding.
- For limbs, apply the windlass tourniquet high and tight; tighten until bleeding stops and note the time.
- For torso or junctional areas, pack the wound with hemostatic gauze and apply firm, direct pressure with the pressure bandage.
- For penetrating chest wounds, apply a chest seal to cover the wound.
- Cover the casualty with the emergency blanket to prevent shock and prepare to brief arriving EMS.
