The First Aid Only Burn Care Kit (SKU 3030) is scoped for minor first- and second-degree thermal burns presenting with redness, blistering, and pain. It is not a substitute for professional medical treatment and does not cover chemical, electrical, radiation, or airway burns. Any burn that appears charred, waxy white, or circumferential, or that covers more than 10% of body surface area in an adult, requires immediate EMS activation. Knowing the limits of this kit is as critical as knowing how to deploy it.

Kit components are organized by operational function: nitrile exam gloves for BSI protection, three sterile gel-soaked burn dressings in graduated sizes, a 4-inch conforming gauze roll for securing the dressing, and 7.25-inch shears for exposure. Dressing selection requires full burn coverage plus a 1-inch margin of healthy skin on all sides. The conforming gauze wrap must be snug enough to hold the dressing without restricting blood flow, verified by the two-finger clearance standard.

Post-treatment protocol includes monitoring for shock indicators such as pale skin, rapid breathing, and confusion, elevating the burned limb where possible, and arranging evaluation by a qualified medical professional. All burn care components are single-use. A partially used kit must not be returned to service. The kit shall be visually inspected monthly and fully inventoried after each deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY: Verify the hazard has been neutralized, whether that means the power is off or the heat source has been removed, before initiating any care. Do not approach the patient until the scene is confirmed safe.

2. DON NITRILE EXAM GLOVES: Put on both nitrile exam gloves immediately upon opening the kit before touching the patient or any sterile component. This establishes BSI protection for both the responder and the patient.

3. POSITION AND REASSURE THE PATIENT: Direct the patient to a stable, safe position. Provide calm verbal reassurance while you prepare equipment to reduce patient anxiety and prevent unnecessary movement.

4. EXPOSE THE BURN SITE: Use the 7.25-inch shears to cut away clothing covering or adjacent to the burn. Cut around any fabric that is melted or adhered to the skin. Do not pull adhered material away from the wound.

5. ASSESS BURN SEVERITY: Evaluate the burn for depth, size, and location. If the burn appears charred, waxy white, circumferential, or involves the face, neck, or airway, activate EMS immediately and do not proceed with kit deployment. For redness, blistering, and pain consistent with first- or second-degree burns, continue.

6. SELECT THE APPROPRIATE DRESSING: Choose the burn dressing size that will cover the entire wound plus a 1-inch margin of healthy skin on all sides. Available sizes are 8x18 inches for large areas, 4x4 inches for medium localized burns, and 2x6 inches for small narrow burns. Do not stack dressings.

7. APPLY THE BURN DRESSING: Open the sterile packaging and place the dressing gel-side down directly onto the burn with full contact across the wound surface. Do not rub the dressing onto the wound and do not apply pressure.

8. SECURE WITH CONFORMING GAUZE: Begin wrapping the 4-inch conforming gauze roll starting distal to the wound and wrap toward the torso. The wrap should be snug enough to hold the dressing in place. Verify adequate circulation by confirming two fingers can slide easily under the wrap.

9. MONITOR FOR SHOCK AND ELEVATE THE LIMB: Keep the patient calm and monitor continuously for shock indicators including pale skin, rapid breathing, and confusion. Elevate the burned limb above heart level if the patient's condition allows.

10. ARRANGE MEDICAL FOLLOW-UP: All burns beyond the most trivial carry infection risk and require evaluation by a qualified medical professional. Arrange transport or professional evaluation as soon as the patient is stabilized. Document time of injury and interventions performed.
