Quick Overview

The First Aid Only Burn Care Kit (440-O/FAO) is a pre-hospital burn management system designed for first and second degree thermal burns, enabling trained responders in kitchens, workshops, laboratories, and welding environments to cool, protect, and stabilize minor burn injuries before professional medical care is available.

This kit is purpose-built for environments where thermal burn risk is elevated and immediate intervention determines patient outcome. Its loadout supports the four-phase deployment protocol: scene safety, cooling, dressing application, and securement. Components include sterile gel-soaked burn dressings in two sizes, self-adhering wrap, gauze, cloth tape, nitrile gloves, scissors, and a weatherproof case with wall-mount capability for fixed-station staging. The kit is a supplement to a full first aid station, not a replacement.

Deployment readiness depends on correct dressing selection. The 4x4 inch dressings address localized burns to hands and wrists, while the 4x16 inch dressing covers larger linear areas such as the forearm or lower leg. All dressings apply gel-side down with full coverage and no rubbing. Securement is accomplished with self-adhering wrap applied loosely to maintain circulation. Cloth tape is never applied directly to burned skin.

This kit carries defined contraindications that operators must know before deployment. It is not appropriate for third-degree burns with charred, white, or numb tissue, large surface area second-degree burns covering an entire limb or torso section, chemical burns, electrical burns, or airway and inhalation injuries. These presentations require immediate 9-1-1 activation, not kit deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY AND DON PPE: Verify the patient is no longer in contact with the burn source before approaching. Open the kit and don nitrile exam gloves immediately, before any patient contact.

2. STOP THE BURN AND BEGIN COOLING: Cool the burn with cool, not cold, running water for 10 to 20 minutes if water is available. Do not apply ice, ointments, creams, sprays, butter, or any unapproved substance to the wound.

3. CLEAR THE BURN AREA: Use the kit scissors to cut away clothing overlying the burn site. Do not pull or remove any fabric that has adhered directly to the skin.

4. SELECT THE CORRECT BURN DRESSING: Choose the 4x4 inch dressing for localized burns to hands, wrists, or small areas. Choose the 4x16 inch dressing for larger linear burns such as the forearm or lower leg.

5. APPLY THE BURN DRESSING: Open sterile packaging carefully to preserve sterility. Place the gel side of the dressing directly onto the entire burn area with full coverage. Do not rub the dressing against the wound surface.

6. SECURE THE DRESSING: Apply self-adhering wrap loosely over the dressing to hold it in place without compression. Never apply cloth tape directly onto or near the burn site.

7. CHECK DISTAL CIRCULATION: After securement, assess capillary refill, skin color, and warmth in the fingers or toes distal to the dressing. Loosen the wrap immediately if circulation appears compromised.

8. STABILIZE THE PATIENT AND ARRANGE DISPOSITION: Keep the patient calm and monitor for signs of shock. Do not rupture any blisters, as the blister surface is a sterile barrier against infection. Advise the patient to seek formal medical evaluation, as all burn injuries warrant assessment by a qualified medical provider.

9. RESTORE KIT READINESS: Dispose of all used materials appropriately. Conduct a full inventory of the kit. Replace any used or compromised items immediately, as the kit is considered operationally deficient until restocked to original loadout.
