Quick Overview

The First Aid Only Enhanced Burn Kit is a pre-hospital field treatment system designed to cool, protect, and stabilize minor thermal burns in industrial and workplace environments until professional medical care can be reached.

This kit provides trained first responders with the capability to address first-degree and partial-thickness second-degree burns across a limited surface area. Core deployment objectives include stopping the burning process through rapid cooling, delivering immediate pain relief, creating a sterile contamination barrier, and stabilizing the patient for transport. The kit is field-ready for environments including industrial kitchens, welding and fabrication shops, manufacturing facilities, and automotive garages. It is a bridging measure, not a replacement for professional medical evaluation.

The kit contains a complete component set organized for rapid operator deployment. Personal protective equipment includes four nitrile exam gloves. Patient preparation tools include heavy-duty 7.25-inch shears with a blunt tip for safe clothing removal. Primary treatment is delivered through four sizes of sterile gel-soaked burn dressings: 12x16 inches, 8x18 inches, 4x4 inches, and 2x6 inches. Dressing security is maintained with two 4-inch conforming gauze rolls, applied loosely to prevent circulatory compromise from swelling.

Operational readiness requires quarterly inspections and immediate post-use restocking under Part Number 91264. Inspection protocol covers container integrity, sterile packaging compression tests, expiration date verification on all burn dressings, and full component inventory. Storage must protect the kit from extreme temperatures, moisture, and direct sunlight. Vehicle compartment storage is specifically discouraged due to temperature instability risks that can degrade component performance.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND INITIAL ASSESSMENT: Confirm the scene is safe and all personnel are clear of the hazard. Verbally verify that the burning process has stopped and the patient is no longer in contact with the hot surface.

2. DON PPE: Open the kit immediately and put on a pair of nitrile exam gloves before making any contact with the patient. This protects both the operator from body substance exposure and the patient's compromised skin from contaminants.

3. EXPOSE THE INJURY: Use the 7.25-inch shears to cut away clothing and fully expose the entire burn area. Cut around any material that appears melted or adhered to the skin. Do not pull adhered material away.

4. SELECT THE APPROPRIATE BURN DRESSING: Choose the dressing size that fully covers the burn with a 1 to 2 inch margin of overlap onto uninjured skin. For a burn approximately 10x4 inches, the 8x18-inch gel-soaked dressing is the correct selection.

5. APPLY THE BURN DRESSING: Tear open the sterile foil packet and unfold the dressing. Gently lay the gel side directly onto the entire burn surface, ensuring full coverage with margin onto uninjured skin.

6. SECURE THE DRESSING: Using one 4-inch conforming gauze roll, begin wrapping at the point farthest from the heart and work inward. Apply loosely enough to hold the dressing in place during transport. Never apply with a tourniquet effect. Check circulation, sensation, and movement in the distal extremity if trained to do so.

7. MANAGE FOR SHOCK AND TRANSPORT: Keep the patient calm and cover uninjured areas to retain body heat and help prevent shock. Activate EMS or transport to an appropriate medical facility immediately. All burns of this nature require professional medical evaluation.
