Quick Overview

The GI Anglehead Flashlight (MX-991/U) is a military-standard incandescent field light that provides illumination, colored-filter navigation, manual signaling, and hands-free carry capability for operators in austere or low-light environments.

The MX-991/U is built around a 90-degree anglehead design that directs the beam parallel to the body during chest-mounted carry, keeping the operator's silhouette low and the working area illuminated without requiring a free hand. Power comes from two D-Cell batteries housed in a sealed compartment secured by an O-ring-equipped tail cap, providing water resistance in heavy rain and brief submersion when properly assembled. The spare components caddy inside the tail cap holds one replacement bulb and two colored lens filters, making the unit fully self-contained for field maintenance without tools.

The 3-position switch provides three distinct operational states: center OFF for safe carriage, up for constant-on illumination, and down for momentary SIGNAL output used in Morse code and pre-arranged light sequences. Raised switch guards on both sides of the switch block reduce the risk of accidental activation, which preserves battery life and maintains light discipline in sensitive environments. Deploying the red lens filter preserves dark-adapted scotopic vision during low-light navigation, while the blue lens enhances contrast for red-ink map reading, though both filters reduce total lumen output and effective range.

Readiness protocols for the MX-991/U include pre-operation inspection of the O-ring, battery condition, and spare components, along with quarterly silicone-based grease application to the O-ring seal and annual battery replacement in dedicated emergency kits regardless of indicated charge level.

Field Application Steps

1. REMOVE THE TAIL CAP: Unscrew the tail cap counter-clockwise and remove the spring and any internal packaging if the unit is new.

2. INSERT BATTERIES: Insert two D-Cell batteries with the negative terminal first, both oriented in the same direction toward the head assembly.

3. REINSTALL THE TAIL CAP: Re-seat the spring and screw the tail cap clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten.

4. CONDUCT A FUNCTION CHECK: Cycle the 3-position switch to ON, then to OFF, then depress the SIGNAL position to confirm momentary output is operational.

5. DEPLOY THE RED LENS FILTER FOR LOW-LIGHT NAVIGATION: Unscrew the head assembly ring (bezel), remove the clear lens and reflector assembly, and retrieve the red lens filter from the spare components caddy in the tail cap. Place the red filter on top of the clear lens, re-seat the reflector, and screw the bezel back on until snug. Activate the light and confirm red output before moving.

6. CONFIGURE FOR HANDS-FREE CARRY: For personal carry, slide the metal belt clip over a PALS webbing loop, belt, or sturdy pocket edge and angle the head to illuminate the area directly in front of you. For area lighting, unfold the D-Ring on the tail cap and suspend the unit from a ridgeline or overhead hook using a carabiner or cord.

7. INITIATE SIGNALING: Confirm the 3-position switch is in the center OFF position before beginning. Press and hold the SIGNAL button to transmit light and release to extinguish. Use timed presses to generate Morse code or pre-arranged signal sequences upon arrival at the rally point.

8. REPLACE A FAILED BULB IN THE FIELD: Unscrew the bezel and remove the reflector assembly, which will carry the failed bulb with it. Unscrew the failed bulb from the reflector base, retrieve the spare bulb from the tail cap caddy, and screw the new bulb into the reflector base until finger-tight. Reassemble the head and test for function.

9. CONDUCT POST-OPERATION MAINTENANCE: Wipe down the exterior to remove mud, dirt, and moisture. If the unit was exposed to saltwater, rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly before storage. Remove batteries if the unit will be stored for more than 30 days.
