Quick Overview

The GI-Style 2-Piece Aluminum Mess Kit is a self-contained field cooking and eating system used by individual operators to heat liquids, cook single-portion rations, and consume meals in tactical, recreational, or emergency environments.

The kit consists of three functional components integrated into a two-piece form factor: a deep basin cooking pan, a two-compartment plate and lid, and an integrated folding handle. The cooking pan serves as the primary vessel for boiling water or preparing dehydrated meals. The plate inverts to function as a heat-trapping lid during cooking, reducing boil times and conserving fuel. When nested and latched, the folding handle locks the pieces together for rattle-free transport in a pack or kit.

Deployment readiness depends on correct sequencing and heat discipline. The handle is uninsulated and reaches dangerous temperatures during use, requiring an insulated glove or pot-gripping tool for all adjustments. The kit is compatible with solid fuel, alcohol, and canister stoves, as well as controlled coal beds. It is not designed for open, active fires, as extreme focused heat will warp or dent the aluminum.

Sustained capability requires consistent post-use maintenance. Both components must be cleaned as soon as practical after use, dried completely before nesting, and stored in a cool, dry location. The handle rivet is the primary structural vulnerability and should be inspected before each deployment for wobble or locking failure. A desiccant packet placed inside the nested kit during long-term storage prevents oxidation.

Field Application Steps

1. PLACE AND UNLATCH: Set the kit on a stable surface and unlatch the folding handle from its locked position over the plate and lid.

2. EXTEND THE HANDLE: Rotate the handle to its fully extended position before separating any components.

3. SEPARATE COMPONENTS: Remove the plate and lid from the cooking pan and place it on a clean nearby surface, eating side up.

4. LOAD THE COOKING PAN: Add the required amount of water or food to the cooking pan before placing it on any heat source. Never apply heat to an empty pan.

5. SEAT THE PAN ON THE HEAT SOURCE: Place the loaded cooking pan securely onto a stable, level heat source, whether a solid fuel tablet stove, alcohol burner, canister stove, or controlled coal bed.

6. APPLY THE LID: Invert the plate and lid and place it on top of the cooking pan to trap heat, reduce boil time, and conserve fuel. Confirm proper seating before ignition.

7. IGNITE AND MONITOR: Ignite the heat source and monitor the cook. Use the extended handle with an insulated glove to adjust pan position as needed. Do not touch any metal surface with bare hands.

8. EXTINGUISH AND REMOVE: Once water reaches a rolling boil or food is fully cooked, extinguish the heat source. Using a gloved hand, grip the folding handle and move the pan to a level, non-flammable surface.

9. REMOVE THE LID SAFELY: Carefully lift the inverted plate and lid away from the pan, directing the escaping steam away from your face and hands.

10. TRANSITION TO DINING: Pour boiled water directly into a meal pouch for rehydration, or transfer cooked food into the two compartments of the plate for consumption.

11. CLEAN IMMEDIATELY AFTER USE: Remove all food residue from both components as soon as practical. Use a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. In the field, use sand or dirt with water and rinse thoroughly. Do not use steel wool or abrasive scouring pads.

12. DRY, NEST, AND LATCH FOR STOWAGE: Dry both pieces completely before nesting to prevent oxidation. Nest the plate into the cooking pan, fold the handle over the top, and press down until it locks securely for transport.
