Quick Overview

The HeatStore Reflective Survival Sleeping Bag is an emergency bivvy system designed to prevent hypothermia in unplanned cold-weather exposure scenarios by reflecting radiant body heat back to the user while providing a waterproof and windproof barrier.

The bag's primary thermal capability comes from its aluminized PET interior, which reflects the user's own radiant heat back toward the body, reducing convective, evaporative, and radiant heat loss simultaneously. The non-woven nylon fiber composite laminated to this interior layer provides puncture resistance and tear strength sufficient for deployment on unprepared ground surfaces where a standard foil blanket would fail. The high-visibility orange exterior serves a dual function: passive solar heat absorption and high-contrast visual signaling to search and rescue assets in both air and ground operations.

Operator effectiveness with this system depends directly on insulating clothing worn inside the bag at deployment. The bag reflects heat but does not generate it, meaning a user in advanced hypothermia who has stopped producing sufficient body heat will not be rescued by the bag alone. Wet or sweat-soaked clothing must be removed before entry, as moisture accelerates heat loss and negates the thermal protocol the bag is designed to support.

Field readiness requires pre-deployment inspection for punctures, seam separations, and pinhole leaks before the bag is returned to its storage pouch. The material is flammable and non-breathable, making ventilation discipline and distance from heat sources non-negotiable protocol. This is a short-term survival tool rated for emergency use, not a replacement for a temperature-rated sleeping system in planned overnight operations.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT AND PREPARE YOUR SITE: Cease movement before exhausting energy reserves and identify a position with maximum natural protection from wind, rain, and overhead hazards such as a ditch, the downwind side of a rock outcropping, or a dense thicket. Clear the ground of sharp sticks, rocks, and snow, then construct a ground insulation pad using pine boughs, dry leaves, grass, or a backpack to a depth of several inches.

2. UNPACK AND ORIENT THE BAG: Remove the HeatStore bag from its storage pouch and unfold it carefully, avoiding contact with branches or sharp objects that could compromise the material. Position the fully unfolded bag on top of your prepared ground pad before entry.

3. LAYER UP AND STRIP WET CLOTHING: Put on all available dry insulating clothing layers before entering the bag, and remove any wet or sweat-soaked garments if conditions allow. The bag reflects your body heat back to you and does not generate warmth independently, so the quality and dryness of your insulating layers are the primary thermal variable.

4. ENTER THE BAG FEET-FIRST: Slide into the bag feet-first as you would a standard sleeping bag, maintaining control of the opening. Pull additional gear inside with you, including your pack and boots, to prevent freezing of critical equipment and to add insulating mass.

5. SEAL AND ESTABLISH A VENTILATION PORT: Pull the opening up to chin or shoulder level and use your hands or gear to partially close it. Do not seal the bag completely. Intentionally maintain a small ventilation port and ensure your mouth and nose remain outside the bag at all times.

6. MONITOR FOR CONDENSATION AND ADJUST: Understand that body moisture will condense on the interior surface of the bag during use. This is unavoidable and is the primary operational limitation of this system. Maintain your ventilation port to mitigate moisture buildup and plan for extraction or rescue before internal moisture saturation degrades your insulating layers.
