Quick Overview

The HyFin Vent Chest Seal Compact Twin Pack is a vented occlusive dressing used by tactical operators, law enforcement, and pre-hospital responders to seal open pneumothorax wounds and prevent life-threatening air accumulation in the pleural cavity.

The twin pack contains two 4.75" x 4.75" chest seals with an advanced hydrogel adhesive engineered to maintain adhesion on skin contaminated with blood, sweat, or hair. Each seal features a 3-channel vent system that functions as a one-way valve, allowing trapped air and fluid to escape from the pleural cavity during exhalation while blocking atmospheric air from entering during inhalation. The redundant vent design remains functional even if two of the three channels are obstructed, a critical capability in high-contamination environments. The compact packaging, 25% smaller than standard configurations, is optimized for IFAKs, police duty belt pouches, ankle trauma kits, and minimalist load-outs.

Application protocol requires wound site preparation using the included gauze pad to create a dry adhesion surface, followed by centered placement of the seal with firm pressure applied from center outward. The transparent backing allows precise positioning over the wound before full liner removal. A single twin pack provides complete coverage for both entry and exit wounds on one casualty, making it the appropriate deployment standard for any penetrating torso injury within the treatment zone defined as the neck to the navel.

Responders must continuously reassess the casualty after seal application. If signs of tension pneumothorax develop, including increasing respiratory distress, tracheal deviation, or absent breath sounds on the injured side, the protocol calls for lifting one edge of the seal to vent trapped air, resealing, and escalating to advanced medical care immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. EXPOSE AND IDENTIFY: Move the casualty to a position of relative safety. Cut away all clothing from the chest and abdomen, then inspect the front, back, and axillary regions to locate all penetrating wounds before proceeding.

2. OPEN THE PACKAGE: Tear the foil pouch at the red-tipped notches using the Red-Tip Technology tear points. Remove one chest seal and the included gauze pad, keeping the second seal sealed and sterile until needed.

3. PREPARE THE WOUND SITE: Wipe aggressively in a circular motion around the wound using the gauze pad to remove blood, moisture, and debris. A clean, dry adhesion surface is critical to seal performance and cannot be skipped.

4. APPLY THE CHEST SEAL: Peel the clear transparent backing liner without touching the adhesive surface. Center the seal vent-side up directly over the wound, then press firmly from the center outward, ensuring all edges make full contact with the skin.

5. TREAT ADDITIONAL WOUNDS: Inspect for an exit wound or any additional penetrating wound within the torso box, defined as neck to navel. If found, retrieve the second chest seal from the twin pack and repeat Steps 3 and 4 for that wound.

6. MONITOR AND REASSESS: Position the casualty to support respiratory comfort. Continuously monitor respiratory rate, effort, and quality. If the casualty develops severe respiratory distress, absent breath sounds on the injured side, tracheal deviation, distended neck veins, cyanosis, or signs of shock, suspect tension pneumothorax immediately.

7. MANAGE SUSPECTED TENSION PNEUMOTHORAX: Lift one edge of the applied seal to allow trapped air to escape, a procedure known as burping the seal. Reseal the wound and escalate to the highest available level of medical care without delay.

8. DOCUMENT AND REPORT: Record the number of seals applied, wound locations, time of application, and any changes in the casualty's condition. Report all findings directly to incoming EMS or medical personnel upon handoff.
