Quick Overview

The HyFin Vent Chest Seal Twin Pack is a dual occlusive venting dressing used by trained tactical, rescue, and pre-hospital personnel to seal open penetrating chest wounds and prevent life-threatening tension pneumothorax.

Penetrating trauma to the thoracic cavity creates an open pathway for air to enter the pleural space, a condition known as an open pneumothorax or sucking chest wound. Left untreated, trapped air builds pressure and collapses the lung. The HyFin Vent Chest Seal addresses this through an integrated three-channel pressure-relief venting system that closes on inhalation to block atmospheric air ingress and opens on exhalation to allow trapped air to escape. The three-channel design provides failsafe redundancy, keeping the seal functional even if one or two channels are occluded by blood or debris.

The Twin Pack is configured for a single penetrating event with both an entry and exit wound, or for treatment of two separate casualties. Each seal features an advanced hydrogel adhesive engineered to maintain an airtight occlusive seal on skin contaminated with blood, sweat, body hair, or environmental debris. A large red pull tab enables rapid liner removal with gloved or fluid-slick hands, and the transparent polymer body allows the operator to confirm centered placement and full adhesive contact over the wound site.

Readiness and proper storage are critical to operational effectiveness. The foil pouch must remain sealed, undamaged, and within its printed expiration date. Adhesive performance can be degraded by extreme heat, cold, direct sunlight, or prolonged water exposure. This is a sterile, single-use device and must be replaced after any deployment or package opening, including training scenarios.

Field Application Steps

1. EXPOSE AND IDENTIFY: Cut away clothing to fully expose the casualty's chest, both front and back. Positively identify all open chest wounds and verbally note their locations before proceeding.

2. OPEN THE POUCH AND PREPARE THE SITE: Tear open the foil pouch at the pre-cut notches and remove all contents. Using the included gauze pad, wipe the skin surrounding the wound with firm pressure, sweeping away from the wound opening to create a clean, dry landing zone approximately 2 to 3 inches wide around the entire wound perimeter.

3. REMOVE THE SEAL FROM ITS LINER: Grasp the large red pull tab and peel the chest seal away from its plastic liner. Minimize direct contact with the adhesive surface to preserve bonding integrity.

4. APPLY SEAL AT FULL EXHALATION: If the casualty is conscious, instruct them to take a deep breath and blow it all the way out. At full exhalation, place the seal adhesive-side down, centered directly over the entry wound.

5. SECURE AND VERIFY THE SEAL: Press firmly from the center outward, ensuring the entire adhesive border makes full contact with the skin for a complete occlusive seal. Confirm that clothing or gear is not covering or kinking the vent channels.

6. ASSESS FOR EXIT WOUND: With cervical spine precautions applied if indicated, log roll the casualty to expose the back. Systematically inspect for an exit wound or additional unsealed penetrating injuries. Note that exit wounds are often larger and more irregular than entry wounds.

7. DEPLOY SECOND SEAL ON EXIT WOUND: If an exit wound is identified, repeat steps 2 through 5 using the second chest seal from the pack.

8. MONITOR AND REASSESS: Position the casualty for comfort, typically sitting up and leaning forward. Continuously monitor respiratory rate, work of breathing, and mental status. If breathing deteriorates, reassess for vent channel obstruction or signs of tension pneumothorax, including severe respiratory distress, tracheal deviation, jugular vein distension, or absent lung sounds, and escalate to advanced intervention by authorized personnel as required.
