Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Ambu SEBS Bag Valve Mask is a single-use manual resuscitator used by trained medical and rescue personnel to deliver positive pressure ventilation to apneic or inadequately breathing patients in pre-hospital, hospital, and tactical environments.

The BVM consists of three functional component groups: the patient interface group, the ventilation delivery group, and the high-concentration oxygen group. The SEBS ventilation bag is the primary delivery mechanism, providing a non-slip grip even in wet or contaminated conditions and self-reinflating after each compression. The crystal-clear patient valve housing serves as a real-time diagnostic surface, allowing the operator to confirm valve flutter and identify occlusions during every ventilation cycle. When connected to an oxygen source at 15 LPM, the oxygen reservoir bag fills with 100% oxygen, enabling high-FiO2 ventilation.

Correct size selection is a critical readiness decision before deployment. The device is available in Adult, Pediatric, and Infant configurations, corresponding to patient weights above 30 kg, 10 to 30 kg, and below 10 kg respectively. Using an adult BVM on an infant can cause catastrophic barotrauma, while an undersized BVM on an adult delivers inadequate tidal volume and risks hypoxia. Operators must confirm patient size before opening the sealed package.

This device is governed by a strict single-use protocol. After one patient encounter, the entire assembly, including the bag, mask, tubing, and reservoir, is classified as biohazardous medical waste and must be disposed of in a designated biohazard container in accordance with agency, local, and federal regulations. Cleaning, sterilizing, or reusing any component is prohibited under all circumstances.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY AND ASSESS THE PATIENT: Don appropriate PPE before approaching. Assess the patient's respiratory status and confirm apnea or profound hypoventilation before proceeding.

2. OPEN THE AIRWAY: Use head-tilt/chin-lift for non-trauma patients or jaw-thrust if spinal injury is suspected. Clear any visible obstructions from the airway before applying the mask.

3. SELECT THE CORRECT SIZE AND OPEN THE PACKAGE: Confirm patient weight to determine correct BVM size: Adult for patients above 66 lbs (30 kg), Pediatric for 22 to 66 lbs (10 to 30 kg), and Infant for patients below 22 lbs (10 kg). Tear open the sealed package and remove the unit.

4. INSPECT AND ASSEMBLE THE UNIT: Rapidly inspect all components for damage or missing parts. If high-concentration oxygen is indicated, attach the reservoir bag to the rear of the ventilation bag and connect standard oxygen tubing to the inlet port with the regulator set at 15 LPM. Confirm the reservoir bag inflates before proceeding.

5. APPLY THE MASK TO THE PATIENT: Position yourself at the patient's head. Place the mask apex over the bridge of the nose and seat the base in the cleft of the chin.

6. ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN A MASK SEAL: With two rescuers, apply a two-handed C-E grip: the "C" formed by the thumb and index finger applies downward pressure on the mask while the remaining fingers lift the jaw into the mask along the mandible. When operating solo, maintain a one-handed C-E grip and compress the bag with the opposite hand.

7. DELIVER VENTILATIONS AT THE CORRECT RATE: Compress the bag smoothly over one full second, delivering only enough volume to produce visible chest rise. Ventilate adults at one breath every 5 to 6 seconds and children or infants at one breath every 3 to 5 seconds.

8. MONITOR VENTILATION EFFECTIVENESS: Observe for equal, bilateral chest rise and fall with each breath. Listen for air leaks around the mask seal and watch the clear valve housing for occlusions. Monitor for improvement in skin color and vital signs.

9. DECOMMISSION THE DEVICE AFTER USE: Once care is transferred or the intervention is terminated, treat the entire BVM assembly as grossly contaminated biohazardous waste. Dispose of all components, including the bag, mask, tubing, and reservoir bag, immediately in a designated red biohazard bag or biohazard container. Do not place any component in standard trash.
