Quick Overview

The KEMP USA 2-Inch Self-Closure Elastic Bandage is a latex-free compression bandage used by first responders, athletic trainers, and prepared operators to manage acute soft tissue injuries, secure primary dressings, and provide joint support on small extremities.

The bandage is purpose-built for wrists, hands, ankles, feet, and corresponding pediatric limbs. Its 2-inch width and 5-yard stretch length provide sufficient material for complete figure-eight wrapping techniques on these approved body parts. The self-closure hook-and-loop strip at the terminal end allows rapid securing, adjustment, and removal without clips or tape, keeping deployment efficient under field conditions. The cotton and polyester blend is latex-free, reducing allergen risk across a broad patient population.

Correct deployment follows a four-phase protocol: pre-deployment assessment, positioning and anchoring, figure-eight technique, and final securing with post-application circulation assessment. Each phase requires a CSM evaluation, checking circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to the injury. Recording a baseline before application and comparing it against post-wrap findings is operationally critical. Any deterioration in capillary refill, sensation, or skin color requires immediate loosening or removal of the bandage.

Sustainment readiness depends on wrapper integrity at the time of use. A compromised package removes the bandage from patient care eligibility and limits it to training only. After use, bandages are hand-washed with mild detergent, air-dried flat away from heat and direct sunlight, re-rolled with the self-closure strip on the outside, and stored in a clean, dry location. Cases are supplied in 50-unit quantities, and replacement must be requisitioned immediately after each use to maintain par level.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Confirm the individual wrapper is sealed and intact before opening. A compromised wrapper renders the bandage non-clean and unsuitable for patient care.

2. EXPOSE AND ASSESS THE INJURY SITE: Remove socks and footwear. Visually inspect for open wounds, gross deformity, or severe discoloration. If any break in skin is present, apply a sterile primary dressing before proceeding with the compression wrap.

3. ESTABLISH CSM BASELINE: Assess circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to the injury. Check pedal pulse, capillary refill in toenail beds, sensation, and toe motor function. Record baseline findings before applying the bandage.

4. POSITION THE ANKLE AND ANCHOR THE WRAP: Position the ankle at a neutral, functional 90-degree angle. Unroll 6 to 8 inches of bandage and place the starting end flat on top of the foot just behind the toes. Wrap twice around the ball of the foot, snug but not tight, with direct overlap on each pass.

5. EXECUTE THE FIGURE-EIGHT TECHNIQUE: Bring the bandage diagonally up across the front of the ankle, just above the inner ankle bone, then continue behind the Achilles tendon and around the outside of the ankle. Bring it diagonally back down across the front to create an X pattern, then pass under the arch of the foot.

6. ADVANCE PROXIMALLY WITH 50% OVERLAP: Repeat the figure-eight pattern, moving up the leg with each pass overlapping the previous layer by approximately 50%. Maintain smooth, consistent tension throughout. Do not pre-stretch the bandage before laying it on the limb.

7. SECURE WITH THE SELF-CLOSURE STRIP: Continue wrapping until the heel and ankle are fully covered, ending several inches above the ankle. Press the self-closure strip firmly against the underlying bandage layer to secure.

8. CONDUCT POST-APPLICATION CSM REASSESSMENT: Immediately re-assess capillary refill, sensation, and motor function. Compare findings against the pre-wrap baseline. Ask the patient directly about numbness, tingling, or increasing pain.

9. INSTRUCT THE PATIENT ON CIRCULATION MONITORING: Brief the patient on signs of circulatory compromise, including increasing pain, numbness, tingling, pale or blue skin, and coldness distal to the wrap. Instruct them to loosen or remove the bandage immediately if any of these signs develop. Do not permit a patient to sleep with a newly applied wrap without confirming they understand how to check their own circulation.
