Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Extra Large Adhesive Bandage (2" x 4.5") is a sterile, latex-free wound covering designed for first aid responders, school nurses, and industrial safety personnel managing large abrasions, lacerations, and burns that exceed standard bandage coverage.

This bandage deploys as a primary dressing in high-volume first aid stations across schools, construction sites, warehouses, and food service environments. Its non-stick absorbent pad interfaces directly with the wound bed, absorbing light exudate while preventing adherence to healing tissue. The sheer ventilated plastic backing incorporates micro-perforations that allow air circulation and moisture vapor transmission, reducing skin maceration and supporting a healthier healing environment than fully occlusive alternatives.

Proper deployment follows a three-phase protocol: preparation, bandage application, and post-application assessment. Skin surrounding the wound must be completely dry before application, as the latex-free adhesive will fail on wet, oily, or dirty surfaces. The bandage is not a hemostatic dressing and must not be used on severe bleeding, deep or puncture wounds, contaminated wounds, or wounds already showing signs of infection. These contraindications represent hard limits, not discretionary guidance.

Readiness is maintained through a two-tier inspection schedule: monthly visual inspection of dispenser boxes by first aid station custodians, and a per-use inspection of the individual sterile wrapper before every application. Any compromised wrapper renders the bandage non-sterile and requires immediate discard. The 50-count dispenser box and 1,200-count master case structure supports inventory tracking and continuous resupply at the organizational level.

Field Application Steps

1. ESTABLISH SCENE SAFETY AND DON PPE: Confirm the area is safe to operate in before approaching the patient. Put on disposable medical gloves at minimum to prevent cross-contamination between rescuer and patient.

2. CONFIRM BLEEDING CONTROL: Verify that any significant bleeding has been controlled with direct pressure before proceeding. This bandage is a wound cover, not a hemostatic dressing, and must not be applied to actively bleeding wounds.

3. CLEAN AND DRY THE WOUND: Thoroughly irrigate the wound using soap and water or a suitable antiseptic wound wash. Gently pat the wound and all surrounding skin completely dry with sterile gauze, as any moisture will compromise adhesive function.

4. INSPECT THE STERILE WRAPPER: Before opening, examine the individual wrapper for tears, punctures, moisture, or expiration. A compromised wrapper renders the bandage non-sterile. Discard immediately and select a new unit.

5. OPEN THE PACKAGE ASEPTICALLY: Tear at the designated notches and peel back the wrapper without allowing the bandage to contact any non-sterile surface.

6. CENTER AND APPLY THE BANDAGE: Grasp the bandage by the protective tabs only. Position the non-stick absorbent pad directly and completely over the wound so the wound bed is fully covered.

7. SECURE THE ADHESIVE AND SEAL ALL EDGES: Press one adhesive side firmly onto the surrounding dry skin, then remove the remaining liner and smooth down the opposite side. Run a finger firmly around all four edges to ensure a complete seal with no gaps.

8. ASSESS THE APPLICATION: Confirm the bandage is secure, lies flat, and fully covers the wound with no exposed wound edges.

9. ADVISE THE PATIENT ON ONGOING CARE: Instruct the patient to keep the area clean and dry, change the bandage daily or whenever it becomes wet or soiled, and monitor for signs of infection including redness, swelling, discharge, heat, and increasing pain.

10. DOCUMENT THE TREATMENT: Record the injury, treatment rendered, and time of application in accordance with your organization's documentation protocol.
