Quick Overview

The Kemp USA 8x10 ABD Pad is a sterile, single-use secondary dressing used by first responders, military personnel, and trained operators to absorb moderate to heavy exudate from large surface-area wounds after primary hemorrhage control is established.

The ABD pad's primary capability is exudate absorption across broad wound surfaces, including large abrasions, avulsions, burns, and post-operative sites. Its 8-inch by 10-inch format eliminates the need to stack multiple smaller dressings, providing full coverage with a single field-ready layer. It deploys over primary dressings or directly on injuries with diffuse, oozing bleeding once catastrophic hemorrhage has been addressed by tourniquet, direct pressure, or hemostatic gauze.

Understanding the pad's limitations is as critical as knowing its applications. It contains no clotting agents and cannot independently stop arterial or venous hemorrhage. Its flat form factor makes it unsuitable for deep wound packing in narrow tracts such as gunshot or stab wounds, and it does not create an airtight seal, meaning it must never be used as an occlusive chest dressing for an open pneumothorax.

To function as a pressure dressing, the ABD pad must be paired with an elastic bandage or wrap. On its own, it provides absorption but minimal sustained compression. Used within its intended protocol, as a secondary cover layer secured with an elastic wrap, it maintains a clean wound environment and protects tissue from gross contamination throughout transport and treatment.

Field Application Steps

1. ESTABLISH PRIMARY HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: Before deploying the ABD pad, confirm that catastrophic bleeding has been addressed using a tourniquet, direct pressure, or hemostatic gauze. The ABD pad is a secondary dressing and must not be applied as a substitute for primary hemorrhage control.

2. CONFIRM WOUND TYPE AND SIZE: Assess the wound to verify that the ABD pad is appropriate for the injury. Indicated wound types include large abrasions, avulsions, burns with weeping exudate, and large post-operative sites. Do not use this pad for deep narrow wound tracts or chest injuries requiring occlusion.

3. OPEN STERILE PACKAGING: Open the single-use sterile packaging immediately before application to maintain sterility. Handle the pad by its edges to avoid contaminating the contact surface prior to placement.

4. POSITION THE PAD OVER THE WOUND: Place the ABD pad directly over the wound site or over an existing primary dressing, ensuring the full 8-inch by 10-inch surface covers the wound margins. Center the pad to maximize absorption coverage across the entire injury surface.

5. SECURE WITH ELASTIC WRAP: Apply an elastic bandage or wrap over the ABD pad to hold it in position and provide sustained compression. The pad does not generate meaningful compressive force on its own, and securing it properly is required for it to function as an effective pressure dressing.

6. MONITOR FOR SATURATION DURING TRANSPORT: Observe the pad for signs of heavy saturation throughout transport and treatment. If the pad becomes fully saturated and bleeding continues, reassess the wound and consider whether primary hemorrhage control has been adequately established before adding a second layer.
