Quick Overview

The Kemp USA CPR Pocket Mask Kit is a field-ready barrier ventilation system used by CPR and BLS-trained law enforcement, security personnel, lifeguards, and prepared citizens to deliver safe, effective rescue breaths to non-breathing patients in cardiac arrest emergencies.

The kit is built around a transparent dome mask with a pliable air-filled cuff that conforms to adult, child, and infant facial anatomy. A pre-installed one-way valve with filter prevents patient exhaled air and bodily fluids from reaching the rescuer, providing critical Body Substance Isolation during resuscitation. The red nylon soft pouch with integrated belt loop enables immediate on-person carry and rapid deployment without occupying space inside a primary medical kit. Non-latex exam gloves are the first item donned before any patient contact.

Deployment follows a five-phase protocol: confirm scene safety and don PPE, position the patient supine and open the airway, apply the mask using the C-E grip sealed from nose to chin, deliver rescue breaths over one second each while monitoring for chest rise, then initiate the 30:2 compression-to-breath cycle. The elastic head strap is critical for single-rescuer operations, freeing both hands for airway management. For infant application, the mask is inverted 180 degrees and ventilations are delivered as gentle puffs only.

All consumable components including the one-way valve, gloves, and wipes are strictly single-patient use and must be disposed of in a biohazard receptacle after each deployment. The mask itself is single-patient use unless agency protocol specifies approved high-level decontamination. Monthly inspection of the pouch, cuff inflation, valve seating, and consumable condition is required to maintain operational readiness. An empty or uninspected kit is a liability.

Field Application Steps

1. ENSURE SCENE SAFETY AND DON PPE: Confirm the scene is safe before approaching. Retrieve the red nylon soft pouch, open it, remove all contents, and don the non-latex exam gloves immediately before any patient contact. This is non-negotiable.

2. CONFIRM UNRESPONSIVENESS AND ACTIVATE EMS: Verify the patient is unresponsive and apneic or displaying agonal respirations. Direct a bystander by name to call 9-1-1 and retrieve an AED while you initiate care.

3. POSITION THE PATIENT AND OPEN THE AIRWAY: Place the patient supine on a firm, flat surface. Open the airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. If spinal injury is suspected, use a jaw-thrust maneuver instead.

4. APPLY THE MASK USING THE C-E GRIP: Place the pointed end of the mask sealed over the bridge of the nose, then lower the wider end to cover the mouth and chin groove. Form a "C" with your thumb and index finger pressing down on the dome, and form an "E" with your remaining three fingers gripping the mandible to lift the airway.

5. DELIVER RESCUE BREATHS: Deliver the first rescue breath steadily over 1 second. Watch the transparent dome and the patient's chest for visible rise. If the chest does not rise, re-position the airway and adjust the mask seal before delivering a second breath.

6. INITIATE CHEST COMPRESSIONS: Begin chest compressions immediately following the two rescue breaths. Maintain a 30:2 compression-to-breath ratio for single-rescuer CPR. Do not delay compressions to perfect the mask seal.

7. APPLY HEAD STRAP IF OPERATING ALONE: Thread the elastic head strap through the plastic slot on one side of the mask, run it around the back of the patient's head, and secure it to the other side. Ensure the strap is snug but not constrictive, and does not obstruct circulation or airway structures.

8. INFANT APPLICATION (IF APPLICABLE): Rotate the mask 180 degrees so the wider end covers the bridge of the infant's nose and the pointed end covers the mouth and chin. Deliver ventilations as gentle puffs of air, using only the force required to produce visible chest rise.

9. SUSTAIN RESUSCITATION EFFORT: Continue the CPR cycle without interruption until EMS personnel arrive and assume care, the patient shows signs of recovery, or you are physically unable to continue. If ventilation cannot be achieved after two attempts, proceed immediately with the compression cycle.

10. POST-DEPLOYMENT DECONTAMINATION AND RESTOCK: After patient care is complete, remove and dispose of gloves and the one-way valve in a biohazard receptacle. Follow agency protocol for mask decontamination or disposal. Use the alcohol prep wipes for hand and surface cleaning after gloves are removed. Restock the kit with a new mask, valve, gloves, and wipes before returning it to service.
