Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Firefighter Turnout Gear Bag is a high-capacity PPE transport and containment system used by structural firefighters to stage, deploy, and safely transport complete turnout ensembles and contaminated gear between incidents, stations, and training assignments.

The bag is organized around a main compartment of approximately 4.5 cubic feet, which holds a full structural ensemble including turnout coat, bunker pants, helmet, and boots without compression. Two zippered end pockets are designated by protocol: one for clean items and one exclusively for isolated contaminated gear such as SCBA facepieces and soiled gloves, preventing cross-contamination during transport. Three exterior pouches provide immediate access to mission-essential tools including extrication gloves, door chocks, spanner wrenches, and personal flashlights.

Post-incident containment is a primary capability of this system. After gross decontamination on scene, heavily soiled items are packed into the main compartment and all zippers are sealed completely shut to contain carcinogenic particulates and prevent off-gassing into the vehicle cabin. The 600D water-resistant nylon construction contains moisture and fluids from wet gear, protecting vehicle interiors during transport. The bag is not a decontamination solution and must itself be decontaminated before returning to service with clean equipment.

Readiness sustainment requires weekly inspection and post-incident cleaning. Operators inspect zippers, stitching at carry handle anchor points, metal hardware, and fabric integrity at each cycle. Post-contamination cleaning protocol requires appropriate PPE, department-approved gear cleaner, thorough scrubbing of all interior and exterior surfaces, complete rinsing, and full air-drying before storage to prevent mold and material degradation.

Field Application Steps

1. STAGE BOOTS AND PANTS: Place boots upright at the bottom of the main compartment, then fold bunker pants over the boots with suspenders positioned for immediate access.

2. LAYER COAT AND HELMET: Lay the turnout coat flat on top of the pants, then place the helmet shroud-down over the coat to maintain its structural shape during transport.

3. SECURE HOOD, GLOVES, AND FACEPIECE: Place hood and structural gloves in an accessible location inside the main compartment or a designated exterior pouch. Store the SCBA facepiece in its protective bag inside a designated end pocket to prevent scratching and contamination.

4. STAGE ANCILLARY TOOLS: Verify all mission-essential tools including flashlight, door chocks, and spanner wrenches are stowed in the appropriate exterior pouches and accessible without opening the main compartment.

5. SEAL ALL COMPARTMENTS: Zip all compartments completely shut before transport. A fully sealed bag prevents off-gassing and protects clean gear from ambient moisture and UV exposure.

6. EXECUTE AT-STATION DEPLOYMENT: Carry the bag to the apparatus bay floor or designated donning area and open the main compartment fully. Remove gear in reverse order of packing: helmet first, then coat, then step into boots and pants.

7. USE BAG AS DONNING SURFACE IF NEEDED: If the bay floor is wet or dirty, the unzipped bag interior can serve as a temporary cleaner surface for placing gear during donning.

8. EXECUTE POST-INCIDENT CONTAINMENT: After gross decontamination on scene, doff PPE in a systematic manner and place the most heavily soiled items, coat, pants, and boots, directly into the main compartment.

9. ISOLATE CONTAMINATED SMALL ITEMS: Place SCBA facepiece, gloves, and hood in the designated end pocket, separate from the main compartment contents, to await further decontamination at station.

10. SEAL BAG COMPLETELY FOR TRANSPORT: Once all contaminated gear is loaded, zip ALL compartments completely shut. Transport the bag in an exterior vehicle compartment or sealed trunk area only, never in the passenger cabin.

11. PERFORM POST-USE INSPECTION: Actuate all zippers along their full length, pull firmly on carry handles and shoulder strap, and visually inspect all metal D-rings and strap clips for cracks, corrosion, or wear. Inspect fabric for rips, punctures, or abrasion that would compromise containment.

12. DECONTAMINATE THE BAG BEFORE RETURNING TO SERVICE: Wearing gloves and eye protection, empty the bag completely and turn it inside-out if possible. Scrub all interior and exterior surfaces with department-approved gear cleaner and a soft-bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, and hang to air-dry completely out of direct sunlight before restoring to readiness.
