Quick Overview

The Kemp USA First Responder Bag is a compact, organizationally optimized BLS medical kit used by trained first responders, patrol officers, and off-duty EMS personnel to manage airway, bleeding, and circulation emergencies prior to ALS arrival.

The bag is designed to bridge the capability gap between an individual IFAK and a full ALS trauma duffel. Its 15 by 8 by 8 inch nylon chassis incorporates dual-density structural foam that holds its shape when opened, creating a stable field workstation. Four distinct compartment zones segregate supplies by function: the main compartment for bulkier items like BVMs and wound packing gauze, interior lid elastic loops for immediate-access tools like trauma shears and airway adjuncts, zippered side pockets for PPE and diagnostic equipment, and non-zippered front pockets for high-frequency items. This organizational protocol ensures that any trained operator can locate and deploy a specific item under pressure without visual searching.

Deployment follows a defined six-step sequence: scene assessment, bag placement on the patient's non-injured side, full opening of the main compartment, initial intervention using PPE and bleeding control supplies, secondary assessment using diagnostic tools, and preparation for patient transfer to ALS. The structural foam keeps the bag open and stable throughout this sequence, supporting hands-free access during active patient care. Color selection, either high-visibility orange or pink versus navy, is an operational decision based on whether rapid visual identification or uniform compliance is the priority.

Post-deployment readiness requires immediate restock, decontamination of any surfaces exposed to body fluids using an approved intermediate-level disinfectant, and documentation per agency policy. A bag that has not completed all three sustainment steps is considered out of service and must be treated as unavailable.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-SHIFT INSPECTION: Before every shift, inspect the exterior nylon shell for rips, tears, and seam integrity. Actuate all zippers to confirm smooth operation, verify pull tabs are present, and check shoulder strap clips and buckles for cracks or deformation.

2. VERIFY CONTENTS AND EXPIRATION DATES: Open all compartments and check every item against your agency's standardized load list. Remove and replace any supply with damaged packaging or an expired date before placing the bag in service.

3. SELECT CARRY CONFIGURATION: Adjust the shoulder strap to a length that keeps both hands free during movement to the patient. The shoulder carry is the primary transport method; use the top handle only for short transfers.

4. CONDUCT SCENE ASSESSMENT: On arrival, perform a standard scene size-up before approaching the patient. Do not advance until the scene is confirmed safe.

5. PLACE THE BAG: Set the bag on a stable, dry surface on the patient's non-injured side. Position it within arm's reach but clear of your movement path and any contamination risk.

6. OPEN THE MAIN COMPARTMENT FULLY: Unzip the main compartment completely and allow the structural foam to hold the sides open. This creates a stable workstation with full visibility of all contents.

7. DON PPE AND EXPOSE THE INJURY: Access gloves, mask, and eye protection from the designated PPE side pocket and don before any patient contact. Retrieve trauma shears from the interior lid elastic loops and use them to expose the injury site.

8. INITIATE BLEEDING CONTROL: Retrieve wound packing gauze or rolled dressings from the main compartment and apply hemorrhage control per your training and certification level. Address all immediate life threats before proceeding.

9. CONDUCT SECONDARY ASSESSMENT: Once life threats are controlled, access the BP cuff, stethoscope, and pulse oximeter from the diagnostic side pocket. Obtain and document baseline vitals using the notepad and pen from the front pocket.

10. PREPARE FOR ALS HANDOFF: Repack all non-disposable equipment into their designated compartments. Consolidate disposable waste. Brief the responding ALS unit on patient condition, interventions performed, and documented vitals before transferring care.

11. COMPLETE POST-USE SUSTAINMENT: Immediately following deployment, restock all consumed supplies, decontaminate any surfaces exposed to blood or OPIM using CaviWipes or a 10 percent bleach solution, and allow the bag to air dry completely before restocking. Log all supplies used and report any damage per agency policy. The bag is not in service until all three steps are complete.
