Quick Overview

This device is used to immobilize the spine of a patient found in a seated position, most often during vehicle extrication or in a confined space. It allows rescuers to secure the head, neck, and torso together, enabling a safe transfer to a long spineboard with minimal risk of further injury.

Field Application Steps

  1. Maintain continuous manual in-line stabilization of the patient's head and neck.
  2. Position the KED behind the patient and secure the torso straps in the correct color-coded order: Middle (Green), Bottom (Yellow), Top (Red).
  3. Route and secure the leg straps under the patient's thighs to prevent vertical shifting.
  4. Pad all voids behind the head and neck to achieve a neutral, in-line position.
  5. Secure the head to the device using the chin and forehead straps.
  6. Rotate and extricate the fully immobilized patient as a single unit onto a long spineboard.
