Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Pediatric Airway Pack is a color-coded modular organizational system used by certified EMS, paramedic, flight medic, and emergency department personnel to manage pediatric airway emergencies with speed, accuracy, and reduced cognitive load.

The pack's seven removable, color-coordinated zippered pouches correspond directly to industry-standard length-based resuscitation tapes such as Broselow-Luten and Pedi-Wheel. Each pouch is stocked for a specific pediatric size zone, and a clear vinyl window on each pouch allows immediate visual confirmation of key contents without unzipping. This architecture reduces time-to-intervention during high-stress, low-frequency events where provider error is most likely to occur.

Four exterior pockets provide rapid access to non-size-specific equipment including BVM, portable suction, trauma shears, gloves, and stethoscope before patient sizing is complete. Reflective striping on the exterior and zipper pulls supports low-light deployment at scenes such as motor vehicle collisions. Multiple carry configurations, including a padded shoulder strap and D-ring backpack-style carry, allow hands-free transport across complex terrain and multi-floor environments.

System integrity is entirely dependent on standardized pouch stocking. An incorrectly loaded pouch negates the primary safety function of the bag and introduces serious risk of medical error. The pack is sold unstocked, and the end-user organization bears full responsibility for procuring, loading, and maintaining all medical supplies according to agency-specific load-out protocols.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT CARRY CONFIGURATION: Assess your approach environment before moving. Use the padded shoulder strap for stair climbs or complex terrain to keep both hands free on approach.

2. POSITION THE BAG: Place the bag on a stable, flat surface on the opposite side of the patient from the primary airway provider. This preserves the provider's workspace and prevents interference during intervention.

3. OPEN THE MAIN COMPARTMENT: Unzip the main compartment fully to expose all seven color-coded pouches simultaneously. Do not partially open or selectively unzip.

4. SIZE THE PATIENT: Apply an approved length-based resuscitation tape to determine the correct color zone. Verbally announce the confirmed color to your team using clear, direct communication: "Patient is in the YELLOW zone."

5. RETRIEVE THE CORRECT POUCH: Remove only the pouch that corresponds to the confirmed color zone. Do not remove additional pouches. Commingling equipment across size zones is a critical error.

6. INITIATE AIRWAY INTERVENTION: Open the selected pouch and deploy contents per patient condition and your scope of practice. Use exterior pocket items, suction and BVM, for initial airway clearance and ventilation prior to or concurrent with advanced intervention.

7. ISOLATE USED MATERIALS POST-INCIDENT: After the call, isolate the deployed pouch and all opened supplies. Do not return any contaminated items to the main pack. The pack is out-of-service until a fully stocked, sealed replacement pouch is installed.

8. DECONTAMINATE THE EXTERIOR: Clean all exterior and soiled interior surfaces with an agency-approved disinfectant such as Sani-Cloth or a 10% bleach solution. Follow manufacturer contact time guidelines and air dry completely before returning the pack to front-line service.

9. PROCESS THE USED POUCH: Route the contaminated pouch through your agency's full decontamination and restocking protocol. The pouch may not re-enter logistical supply until it has been fully restocked and sealed.

10. CONDUCT PRE-SHIFT INSPECTION: At the start of each operational period, inspect all zippers, straps, handles, and reflective material for damage. Verify agency ID is present and legible. Open all four exterior pockets and confirm staged equipment is present and sterile seals are intact. Account for all seven interior pouches and confirm each is properly sealed. Any pouch with a broken seal must be replaced before the pack returns to service. Log all inspection results per agency requirements.
