Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Scoop Stretcher is a professional-grade patient transfer device used by Fire-Rescue, EMS, Tactical Medics, and Search & Rescue operators to lift and move trauma patients from unprepared surfaces with minimal spinal and pelvic manipulation.

The scoop stretcher is specifically indicated for high-consequence transfer scenarios including pelvic fractures, spinal column injuries, hip fractures, confined space operations, and multi-system trauma. Its split-body design allows two rescuers to assemble the device around a supine patient without executing a log-roll, eliminating the rotational and lateral forces that can worsen pelvic ring instability or vertebral displacement. This capability is critical when mechanism of injury suggests injuries that log-rolling would exacerbate.

The device consists of two high-impact yellow plastic halves joined by dual-end locking mechanisms at the head and foot ends, confirmed by an audible and tactile click. Three adjustable restraint straps with quick-release buckles secure the patient at the chest, pelvis, and lower extremities prior to lifting. The open-center design permits continued spinal assessment and allows diagnostic imaging without repositioning the patient.

The scoop stretcher is a temporary transfer tool, not a long-term immobilization device. It must be removed as soon as the patient is placed on a cot mattress or vacuum mattress to prevent pressure injuries. Operational readiness requires pre-shift inspection of both halves for cracks or warping, mechanism cycling to confirm positive latch engagement, strap integrity checks, and post-use decontamination with an agency-approved solution or a 1:10 bleach-to-water mixture.

Field Application Steps

1. PREPARATION AND ASSESSMENT: Confirm scene safety and assign a dedicated operator to manual C-spine control, maintained without interruption throughout the entire procedure. Conduct a rapid trauma assessment, clear 360-degree access around the patient, and confirm the patient's weight does not exceed the 350 lb operational limit before deploying the device.

2. DEVICE SIZING AND SEPARATION: Position the assembled stretcher alongside the patient with the top end slightly above the patient's head and the bottom end below the feet. Disengage the head-end lock first, then the foot-end lock, and separate the two halves completely.

3. HALF POSITIONING: Place one half on each side of the patient, parallel to the body, with each half oriented to slide inward from its respective side.

4. THE SCOOP: On the C-spine holder's command, two rescuers simultaneously slide their respective half under the patient using a smooth, low-angle motion, minimizing all patient movement. Connect the foot-end locking mechanism first, then the head-end. Physically confirm both locks are fully engaged by feel and audible click before proceeding.

5. PATIENT RESTRAINT: Apply all three straps prior to lifting: Strap 1 at the chest under the axilla, Strap 2 across the pelvis at the iliac crests, and Strap 3 across the lower extremities distal to the knees. Straps must be snug and secure without impairing the patient's respiration.

6. LIFT AND TRANSFER: Position a minimum of two rescuers at the torso with additional operators at the head and feet. On the C-spine holder's command, lift straight up using proper body mechanics and move the patient directly to the prepared ambulance cot or primary transport surface.

7. DEVICE REMOVAL: Once the patient is on the cot mattress or vacuum mattress, unbuckle all three straps. Disengage the head-end lock first, then the foot-end lock. Gently pull each half out laterally away from the patient. Proceed with definitive care and post-use sustainment of the device.
