Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Universal Head Immobilizer is a rigid lateral and anteroposterior head support device used by trained EMS personnel, first responders, lifeguards, and search and rescue technicians to restrict cervical spine movement during patient packaging, extrication, and transport.

The immobilizer functions as a critical component of a complete Spinal Motion Restriction system, not as a standalone solution. It must be deployed in conjunction with a properly sized cervical collar and a rigid spineboard or scoop stretcher. Its radiolucent construction makes it compatible with X-ray, MRI, and CT imaging, and its vinyl-coated foam build renders it waterproof, buoyant, and non-absorbent to blood and bodily fluids, supporting decontamination protocols across land and aquatic operational environments.

The system consists of four primary components: a base plate that anchors to the spineboard via integrated straps, two contoured head support blocks that provide bilateral lateral immobilization, and two head and chin straps that lock the head against anteroposterior movement. The forehead strap is applied superior to the eyebrows, and the chin strap contacts only the rigid portion of the cervical collar, never soft tissue. Correct strap placement is a patient safety requirement, not a preference.

Once the head is confirmed immobilized, manual stabilization can be transferred to the device and the operator proceeds to secure the torso and legs. A final assessment of airway, breathing, circulation, and neurological status is required before transport. Any vinyl cracking, strap fraying, foam deformation, or degraded hook-and-loop fasteners requires immediate removal from service.

Field Application Steps

1. PREPARE THE BASE PLATE: Before placing the patient, secure the base plate to the head-end of the spineboard by feeding the integrated attachment straps through the board's handholds and cinching them tight.

2. POSITION THE PATIENT: On the command of the rescuer maintaining manual in-line stabilization, log-roll the patient onto the spineboard. Center the patient and confirm the head rests squarely on the prepared base plate.

3. APPLY THE CERVICAL COLLAR: If a cervical collar is not already in place, apply a properly sized collar while maintaining continuous manual stabilization. Do not release manual stabilization at this stage.

4. PLACE THE HEAD SUPPORT BLOCKS: Slide the first contoured foam block inward until it is flush against the side of the head and the cervical collar, then press down firmly to engage the hook-and-loop surface. Repeat with the second block on the opposite side, confirming a snug and symmetrical fit against both the jaw and occipital region.

5. SECURE THE FOREHEAD STRAP: Apply the forehead strap across the forehead, positioned superior to the eyebrows. Tension must be snug and secure without creating pressure injury.

6. SECURE THE CHIN STRAP: Apply the chin strap across the rigid chin support of the cervical collar only. Do not allow the strap to contact soft tissue, as this creates airway obstruction risk and injury potential if overtightened.

7. CONFIRM IMMOBILIZATION: Gently assess for any residual head movement. Once the head is confirmed fully immobilized, manual stabilization can be transferred to the device. Proceed to secure the torso and legs to the spineboard.

8. CONDUCT FINAL ASSESSMENT: After full patient securement, reassess airway, breathing, circulation, and neurological status. Confirm device integrity across all components before initiating transport.
