Quick Overview

The Lifeline Team Sport Coach's Kit is a field-ready first aid system designed to provide immediate, non-definitive care for common athletic injuries, enabling coaches, team managers, and designated parents to stabilize players at the point of injury before advanced medical care is available.

The kit's operational scope covers minor to moderate injuries encountered during practices, games, and travel, including sprains, strains, contusions, minor lacerations, abrasions, and digit injuries. Its contents are grouped by functional purpose across four categories: sprain and swelling management, fracture and digit stabilization, laceration and abrasion care, and general support and utility. This organizational structure allows the operator to identify and deploy the correct equipment rapidly under field conditions without consulting a reference each time.

Deployment protocol follows a five-step sequence: scene safety and initial assessment, injury-specific treatment, abrasion and laceration care if applicable, post-treatment handover to a qualified medical professional, and decontamination with kit resupply. The sprain protocol specifically directs the operator to apply a triangle bandage as a skin barrier before placing an activated cold pack, then secure it with an elastic bandage wrapped distal to proximal, followed by a circulation check at the toenail. These sequenced steps are not suggestions; they are the standard operating procedure for this kit.

Readiness sustainment is a defined responsibility under this SOP. The kit must be inspected before each season, restocked immediately after each use, and stored in a consistent and accessible location at all team activities. Accountability is assigned to a single individual, such as the Head Coach or Team Manager, to ensure the kit is never deployed in a degraded state.

Field Application Steps

1. ESTABLISH SCENE SAFETY: Stop play, clear other players from the area, and ensure the environment is safe before approaching the injured athlete.

2. CONDUCT INITIAL ASSESSMENT: Approach the player, assess responsiveness and general condition, and ask the athlete what happened and where they are experiencing pain. Visually inspect the injury without moving the player excessively.

3. IDENTIFY THE INJURY: Determine the injury type based on the mechanism and visible presentation, such as a probable ankle sprain following an awkward landing with visible swelling and inability to bear weight.

4. ACTIVATE A COLD PACK: Firmly squeeze or fold one of the three included Instant Cold Packs to break the inner pouch, then shake to mix the contents and initiate the cooling reaction.

5. APPLY SKIN BARRIER AND COLD PACK: Place a Triangle Bandage over the injured area as a skin barrier. Never apply the cold pack directly to skin. Position the cold pack over the point of maximum pain and swelling.

6. SECURE WITH ELASTIC BANDAGE: Wrap one Elastic Bandage from the base of the toes upward toward the leg to secure the cold pack and provide even compression that promotes fluid return.

7. CHECK DISTAL CIRCULATION: Press a toenail and confirm that color returns quickly. If color return is delayed, or if the athlete reports numbness, tingling, or bluish skin, loosen the wrap immediately.

8. ADDRESS ABRASIONS OR LACERATIONS IF PRESENT: If a fall produced turf burn or a scrape, put on gloves if available, then clean around the wound with an Antiseptic Towelette, wiping away from the wound opening. Apply a Sterile Gauze Pad with gentle direct pressure if bleeding is present, then place a Non-Adherent Pad over the abrasion and secure it with a Conforming Gauze Roll or Co-Flex Bandage.

9. ASSIST PLAYER OFF THE FIELD: Safely remove the athlete from the court or field and keep them still and supported.

10. EXECUTE HANDOVER: Advise the athlete, parent, or guardian that the injury requires evaluation by a qualified medical professional such as a certified athletic trainer or physician. Document the incident per your organization's policies, including what occurred and what care was provided.

11. DECONTAMINATE AND RESUPPLY: Place all materials contaminated with blood or bodily fluids into the included Hazardous Material Bag and dispose of properly. Inventory all items used and restock the kit before the next team activity.
