Quick Overview

The Luminary OFAK (Operator-Fast-Access-Kit) is a multi-purpose field first aid kit designed for immediate hemorrhage control, airway support, and trauma stabilization, intended for trained personnel operating in tactical, range, vehicle, and remote outdoor environments.

The OFAK is built around a tiered capability framework covering hemorrhage control, soft tissue wound management, minor airway obstruction, fracture and sprain support, and minor burn care. Its component inventory includes hemostatic-impregnated BleedStop Bandages, ABD Pads, a Multi-Trauma Dressing, Conforming Gauze, and a 110mm Oral Airway adjunct, all organized for rapid deployment under stress. The kit chassis features quick-release buckles, YKK zippers, and MOLLE/PALS webbing for platform integration and zero-light access. Operators should note that the included latex tourniquet is not a CoTCCC-recommended device and must be supplemented with a C-A-T or SOF-T for any environment where arterial hemorrhage is a credible threat.

Readiness protocol requires quarterly inspection covering physical integrity, full contents inventory, expiration date verification, and sterile seal confirmation. After any field use, the kit must be immediately taken out of service and fully resupplied before returning to operational rotation. The OFAK supports one casualty with significant non-catastrophic trauma, or up to two casualties with moderate injuries, and functions as a bridge to higher-level care rather than a substitute for professional medical evacuation.

Operator-level augmentation is strongly recommended and includes at minimum one CoTCCC-approved tourniquet staged on exterior PALS webbing, vented chest seals, a nasopharyngeal airway with lubricant, additional nitrile gloves, protective eyewear, and a tactical illumination source for low-light conditions.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY AND DON PPE: Verify the environment is safe before approaching the casualty. Don the included nitrile gloves before any casualty contact and inspect the gloves for tears prior to use.

2. ACCESS THE KIT: Release all quick-release buckles and fully loosen compression straps to open the main compartment completely. Orient zipper pulls by feel if operating in low-light conditions.

3. PERFORM RAPID INITIAL ASSESSMENT: Prioritize identification of massive hemorrhage above all other injuries. Assess the casualty's mental status, breathing, and the location and severity of bleeding before selecting any intervention.

4. APPLY HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: Place an ABD Pad (5"x9") directly over the wound and apply firm, sustained direct pressure. If bleeding is not controlled with direct pressure, apply a BleedStop Bandage directly inside the wound at the point of bleeding.

5. SECURE THE DRESSING: Wrap the ABD Pad with Conforming Gauze (4"x4.1 yds.) and secure with medical tape. Wrap snugly but verify distal circulation by checking for a pulse or capillary refill in the fingers distal to the dressing.

6. USE SHEARS TO EXPOSE INJURY SITES: Cut away clothing, webbing, or footwear as needed with EMT Shears (7.25") to fully expose any suspected injury site before applying treatment. Do not assume the forearm wound is the only injury present.

7. PERFORM SECONDARY HEAD-TO-TOE ASSESSMENT: Systematically assess the casualty from head to toe for additional injuries including fractures, abrasions, and burns. Treat identified injuries using appropriate kit components: triangular bandage cravat and elastic bandages for fractures and sprains, antiseptic wipes for abrasion cleaning, and burn cream for minor first-degree burns only.

8. MANAGE AIRWAY IF INDICATED: If the casualty becomes unconscious and presents with no gag reflex, insert the Oral Airway (OPA, 110mm) to displace the tongue and maintain a patent airway. Do not insert the OPA on a conscious casualty or any casualty with an intact gag reflex.

9. MONITOR THE CASUALTY: Continuously monitor mental status, breathing rate and quality, and the effectiveness of hemorrhage control. Position the casualty for comfort and shock prevention while awaiting evacuation.

10. PREPARE FOR EVACUATION AND HANDOFF: Document all interventions performed, including times applied and materials used. Report a complete and accurate intervention summary to incoming medics or higher-level care providers upon their arrival.

11. TAKE THE KIT OUT OF SERVICE: After any use of any component, immediately remove the kit from operational rotation. Do not return the OFAK to service until every used item has been fully replaced and a complete inspection has been conducted.
