Quick Overview

The Luminary Transport Spit Hood is a single-use, triple-layer mesh restraint device used by law enforcement, corrections, EMS, and court security personnel to contain fluid-borne biohazard threats from spitting or biting subjects during detainment, transport, or crisis intervention.

The hood functions as operator PPE by capturing and absorbing saliva, blood, and vomit at the source, preventing aerosolization and direct contact with personnel. Its translucent mesh construction enables continuous visual monitoring of the subject's mouth and nose throughout deployment, which the SOP designates a non-negotiable duty-of-care requirement. The elastic neckband creates a form-fitting seal below the jawline, and an integrated lock tab secures the band against loosening during struggle or transport.

Deployment is a two-person procedure requiring the subject to be physically restrained prior to application. The deploying officer approaches from a tactically safe position, typically from behind, places the hood in a single decisive motion, and immediately confirms airway patency by verifying unobstructed breathing through the mesh. The two-finger clearance standard between the neckband and the subject's neck is the critical check confirming the device is secured without restricting circulation or respiration.

Critical operational limits govern every deployment. Subjects must never be transported prone while the hood is applied, as positional asphyxia risk is severe. If the subject vomits, the hood must be removed immediately to prevent aspiration. The device is a fluid barrier only, not a bite guard, and is strictly single-use. After removal it is treated as biohazardous material and disposed of in a designated biohazard container.

Field Application Steps

1. VERIFY PREREQUISITES: Confirm the subject is actively spitting, has attempted to spit, or has verbally threatened to spit, establishing the clear biohazard justification for deployment. Ensure the subject is physically restrained, such as handcuffed, before proceeding.

2. ESTABLISH TWO-OFFICER CONFIGURATION: Assign one officer to maintain physical control of the subject's torso and arms. The deploying officer positions themselves at a tactically safe angle, typically from behind the subject, to minimize face exposure during application.

3. DECLARE INTENT: The deploying officer verbally announces "Deploying spit hood!" to inform all personnel on scene of the imminent action before touching the equipment.

4. PREPARE THE HOOD: Retrieve a single individually sealed hood and tear open the packaging immediately prior to application. Unfold the hood completely and identify the elastic neckband opening before moving to the subject.

5. EXECUTE APPLICATION: In a single, decisive motion, place the hood over the subject's head and pull it down until the elastic neckband seats below the jawline around the neck.

6. SECURE AND LOCK: Adjust the neckband so it is snug but not constricting. Confirm fit by sliding two fingers between the band and the subject's neck. Once correct tension is verified, engage the lock tab to prevent the subject from loosening or removing the hood.

7. CONFIRM AIRWAY PATENCY: Immediately inspect the subject's face through the mesh. Confirm the mouth and nose are unobstructed and that normal respiration is visible through chest rise and fall with no signs of distress.

8. MONITOR CONTINUOUSLY: Keep the subject under constant visual observation for the entire duration the hood is applied. If the subject vomits, remove the hood immediately. If breathing, consciousness, or medical status changes at any point, initiate immediate reassessment.

9. POSITION FOR TRANSPORT: Ensure the subject is seated upright or placed in a recovery position on their side. A prone, face-down position is strictly prohibited while the hood is applied due to positional asphyxia risk.

10. REMOVE AND DISPOSE: Upon arrival or when the biohazard threat has been resolved, remove the hood using gloves at minimum. Place the used hood directly into a designated biohazard receptacle. The hood is single-use only and re-use is strictly prohibited.

11. DOCUMENT AND RESUPPLY: Document the deployment in an incident report per agency policy without exception. Immediately resupply your inventory to restore operational readiness before returning to service.
