Quick Overview

A 3-person 72-hour survival kit is a self-contained emergency preparedness system that provides hydration, nutrition, shelter, sanitation, first aid, and utility control capability for three individuals during the critical period following a disaster when infrastructure is unavailable.

The Luminary Mayday 3-Person Emergency Bucket Kit is organized across six operational categories: sustainment, tools and utilities, light and communication, shelter and warmth, sanitation, and basic first aid. Sustainment supplies include three 2,400-calorie food bars rationed at 800 calories per person per day, 18 water pouches rationed at two pouches per person per day, and 50 water purification tablets each capable of treating approximately one liter of water. The purification tablets are the primary field-ready method for extending hydration beyond the sealed water supply by treating secondary sources such as rainwater or water heater reserves.

Shelter and warmth capability is provided by three solar blankets and three ponchos. Solar blankets are deployed with the reflective side inward to trap body heat, or reflective side outward as a thermal barrier or shade surface. Ponchos serve dual-purpose as rain and wind protection and as expedient overhead shelter, ground cover, or water collection surfaces. Communication and situational awareness are maintained through a hand-crank dynamo flashlight and radio capable of receiving AM, FM, and Weather Band emergency broadcasts, supported by a 5-in-1 whistle for distress signaling using the universal three-blast protocol.

The kit is designed as a bridge-to-recovery system for shelter-in-place and initial evacuation scenarios, not a long-term sustainment solution. Utility control tools include a gas and water shut-off wrench, a 15-inch pry bar, leather palm gloves, a utility tool, and 10 yards of duct tape. The included 54-piece first aid kit covers minor wound care only and is not equipped for major trauma, severe bleeding, or airway emergencies.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY: Conduct a rapid safety check of your immediate area before touching any kit contents. Address immediate hazards including falling objects and broken glass, and verify the physical condition of all three individuals.

2. KIT DEPLOYMENT AND INVENTORY: Retrieve the emergency bucket, open it, and conduct a full inventory of all components against the Section 2 equipment list. Keep contents organized by category and accessible for rapid deployment.

3. UTILITY CONTROL - WATER: If major leaks are observed in the structure, locate the main water shut-off valve and close it immediately. Closing the main valve preserves the hot water tank as a usable reserve water source.

4. UTILITY CONTROL - GAS: Shut off the gas supply only if you detect an audible hiss or smell gas at the exterior meter. Turn the valve 90 degrees crosswise to the pipe to close it, and do not attempt to restore gas service yourself. Only a certified technician may restore gas after shut-off.

5. ESTABLISH RATIONING IMMEDIATELY: Distribute the first-day food allowance of one-third of one 2,400-calorie bar per person and two water pouches per person. Do not deviate from this rationing plan for the duration of the 72-hour operational period.

6. ACTIVATE COMMUNICATION: Hand-crank the dynamo flashlight and radio and tune to a Weather Band or emergency broadcast channel. Monitor for official alerts and instructions throughout the operational period.

7. SET UP SANITATION: Designate a sanitation area away from food, water, and sleeping zones. Place the honey bucket with toilet lid in a ventilated location, line it with a toilet liner, and apply T-5 disinfectant after each use. Seal each liner at manageable capacity before replacing.

8. DEPLOY SHELTER AND WARMTH: As temperatures drop, issue one solar blanket per person with the reflective side facing inward to trap body heat. Use ponchos as overhead shelter, ground cover, or water collection surfaces as conditions require.

9. IDENTIFY SECONDARY WATER SOURCES: As soon as feasible, locate supplemental water sources such as rainwater, undamaged pipes, or the hot water tank. Treat all water from non-sealed sources with one purification tablet per liter, or boil vigorously for a minimum of one minute before consumption.

10. CLEAR SECONDARY EXITS IF BLOCKED: Don leather palm gloves before handling the pry bar. Assess structural stability of the blocked area before applying leverage, and use the 15-inch pry bar to clear debris from secondary exits only where it is safe to do so.

11. SIGNAL FOR RESCUE IF REQUIRED: Use the 5-in-1 whistle to transmit the universal distress signal of three sharp blasts. Use the signal mirror component for visual signaling to aircraft or distant personnel when conditions allow.

12. CONDUCT ONGOING READINESS CHECKS: At each rationing interval, verify remaining food, water, and purification tablet quantities. Reserve the 12-hour light stick for critical-need periods such as nighttime medical care, and use the dynamo flashlight as the primary light source to conserve it.
