1. SELECT AND COMMIT TO A STORAGE SITE: Identify a permanent location on a solid, level surface capable of supporting over 260 lbs, such as a concrete slab in a garage or basement. The site must be cool, dark, and away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and chemical contamination. This is the final location. The barrel will not be moved once filled.
2. INSPECT AND PREPARE THE BARREL: Visually inspect the empty barrel interior and exterior for damage or debris. Rinse the interior with clean potable water; if needed, wash with mild dish soap followed by a thorough triple-rinse to remove all soap residue, then allow the interior to air dry completely before proceeding.
3. POSITION THE BARREL BEFORE FILLING: Place the clean, empty barrel in its final storage location before introducing any water. Do not begin filling and then attempt to reposition.
4. FILL WITH POTABLE WATER: Using a drinking-water-safe hose designated exclusively for this purpose, fill the barrel with cold, potable tap water. Stop filling approximately 2 to 3 inches below the bung openings to leave adequate headspace for thermal expansion.
5. TREAT WITH WATER PRESERVER CONCENTRATE: Open the Water Preserver Concentrate and pour the entire contents of the bottle into the filled barrel. Do not portion or save any of the concentrate, as full dosage is required to achieve five-year efficacy.
6. INSTALL AND TORQUE-SEAL BOTH BUNG CAPS: Screw both bung caps in by hand until snug and properly threaded. Place the Bung Wrench over each cap and apply firm, steady pressure to tighten to a seal that cannot be undone by hand. Do not use excessive force that could strip the plastic threads.
7. MARK FILL DATE AND ROTATION DATE: Using a permanent marker or paint pen, write the fill date in MM/DD/YYYY format and the Rotate By date, calculated as fill date plus five years, in a clearly visible location on the top or side of the barrel.
8. SECURE ACCESSORIES TO THE BARREL: Place the Bung Wrench and Siphon Pump in their original packaging or a sealed bag and secure them on top of the barrel with tape or straps. Critical tools must remain co-located with the asset at all times.
9. ACCESS WATER DURING AN EMERGENCY: Use the Bung Wrench to fully remove one bung cap. Loosen but do not fully remove the second cap to act as a vent, preventing vacuum lock. Assemble the Siphon Pump, insert the rigid tube through the open bung hole to the bottom of the barrel, place the flexible outlet hose into a clean container, and operate the pump to dispense water.
10. RESEAL AFTER EACH USE: Remove the pump and fully re-tighten both bung caps with the Bung Wrench after each dispensing session. Once the barrel has been opened for the first time, plan to consume the remaining supply within 6 to 12 months.
11. CONDUCT ANNUAL INSPECTIONS: Each year, visually inspect the barrel exterior for cracking, bulging, or leaking. Physically verify both bung caps remain tight, and confirm the co-located wrench and siphon pump are present and in serviceable condition.
12. EXECUTE MANDATORY FIVE-YEAR ROTATION: On the marked Rotate By date, use the siphon pump to fully drain the barrel. Water drained at rotation remains safe for non-potable uses such as watering gardens or flushing toilets. Perform a full interior cleaning with a triple-rinse, refill with fresh potable water, treat with a new unopened bottle of Water Preserver Concentrate, re-seal, and mark new fill and rotation dates on the barrel.
