Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Air Mask Bag Model 426 is a protective staging and rapid-deployment bag designed to store an SCBA facepiece with its Mask-Mounted Regulator pre-attached, enabling trained firefighters and industrial operators to don breathing apparatus faster at IDLH incidents.

The Model 426 addresses one of the most critical windows in emergency response: the transition from apparatus to entry. By allowing the facepiece and regulator to be stored as a single, pre-connected assembly, the bag eliminates the attachment step during donning, directly reducing task saturation when cognitive load is already high. The main compartment measures 14 inches by 10 inches by 4 inches and is constructed from 1000 Denier Cordura nylon, providing high abrasion and tear resistance while protecting the lens from scratches, grit, and moisture during transport.

The bag's protective closure flap fully encloses the facepiece while routing the low-pressure hose through a designated gap, preventing kinking or stress at the regulator coupling. A heavy-duty spring snap hook at the top of the bag enables secure, one-handed staging on apparatus grab handles, jumpseat mounts, or gear locker hooks, ensuring the assembly remains accessible during turnout. Proper hose routing is a critical readiness checkpoint before the flap is closed, as a compromised hose is identified in the SOP as a catastrophic failure point.

Authorized use is limited to trained and certified SCBA-proficient personnel. The bag itself provides no respiratory, thermal, impact, or chemical protection; all life-safety capability is provided by the SCBA assembly it contains. Cordura nylon is not fire-resistant, and the bag must be shielded from direct flame, embers, and hazardous chemical contact at all times.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE SCBA ASSEMBLY: Perform a complete functional and visual inspection of the facepiece and regulator per manufacturer and agency protocols. Confirm cleanliness and operational readiness before any stowage begins.

2. CONFIRM REGULATOR CONNECTION: Verify that the Mask-Mounted Regulator is properly and securely attached to the facepiece port. Do not stow a partially connected or malfunctioning assembly.

3. INSERT THE ASSEMBLY LENS-FIRST: Carefully place the facepiece and regulator assembly into the main compartment with the lens oriented inward first. This positioning maximizes lens protection during transport and staging.

4. ROUTE THE LOW-PRESSURE HOSE: Position the low-pressure hose to exit cleanly through the designated gap in the closure flap. Verify there are no twists, kinks, or sharp bends, and confirm the hose exits with no stress at the regulator coupling before proceeding.

5. SECURE THE CLOSURE FLAP AND STAGE THE BAG: Close and secure the protective flap fully. Hang the loaded bag via the spring snap hook at its designated ready-position, confirming the mounting point is structurally sufficient for the assembly weight and the dynamic forces of a moving vehicle.

6. ACCESS THE BAG AT THE INCIDENT: Grasp the bag firmly and detach the spring snap hook from its mounting point in a single deliberate motion.

7. OPEN THE CLOSURE FLAP: Open the protective closure flap fully to expose the facepiece and regulator assembly.

8. DEPLOY THE ASSEMBLY: Grasp the regulator and facepiece assembly and withdraw it from the bag in one fluid, uninterrupted motion.

9. DON THE FACEPIECE AND GO ON-AIR: Immediately proceed with standard agency protocols for donning the facepiece and establishing breathing air supply.

10. STOW THE EMPTY BAG: Place the empty bag in a coat pocket or return it to the apparatus. Do not leave it loose on scene where it can create a snag or trip hazard.
