Quick Overview

A construction site first aid kit is a field-ready collection of OSHA-compliant emergency supplies that enables designated first responders, site safety officers, and general crew members to manage common trauma and medical incidents on job sites serving up to 50 personnel until EMS arrives.

This kit is organized by operational purpose across six capability categories: personal protection and assessment, wound cleaning and preparation, minor laceration and abrasion management, moderate bleeding control, musculoskeletal and environmental management, and the deployment platform itself. Contents address predictable construction injury patterns including lacerations, abrasions, burns, sprains, and debris embedded in skin. Bilingual labeling in English and Spanish reduces response time and user error across a diverse workforce. The 24-unit gasketed weatherproof plastic case provides moisture and dust protection with keyhole slots for fixed mounting in a job trailer or gang box.

The kit meets dual OSHA compliance standards: §1926.50(d) for construction site environments and §1910.151b for industrial environments. Critical equipment limitations are clearly defined in the protocol. This kit does not contain a tourniquet or hemostatic dressings, making it unsuitable as a standalone resource for major hemorrhage. Burn cream is rated for minor, superficial first-degree burns only and must not be applied to large, deep, or blistered burns. Personnel are authorized to use kit contents only within the limits of their individual training and certification.

Readiness requires a designated site safety officer to conduct and log a physical inspection no less than once per month, covering case integrity, contents inventory, expiration dates, package integrity, and cleanliness. Any item used from the kit must be reported to the site supervisor immediately, and the kit must be restocked before the next deployment to remain compliant. A used and unrestocked kit is non-compliant and represents an active liability risk on any regulated worksite.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY: Ensure the area is free of hazards including unstable scaffolding, dropped tools, and electrical risks before approaching the patient. Do not advance into an unsafe scene.

2. ACTIVATE EMS: Direct a coworker to call 911 immediately and report the nature of the injury and the site location. Do not delay this step to begin treatment.

3. DEPLOY THE KIT: Retrieve the first aid kit and bring it directly to the patient's side. The gasketed case is designed for rapid transport with an integrated handle.

4. DON PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Open the kit and immediately put on a pair of vinyl exam gloves before making any patient contact. This protects both the rescuer and the patient from cross-contamination.

5. EXPOSE THE INJURY: Use the nickel-plated scissors to cut away clothing over the wound and affected joint to fully expose the laceration and any secondary injuries such as a sprain.

6. CONTROL BLEEDING: Place a 3-inch by 3-inch, 12-ply gauze dressing pad directly onto the laceration and apply firm, direct, and continuous pressure. Do not remove the initial pad if it saturates; add a fresh gauze or ABD pad on top.

7. ELEVATE THE LIMB: If elevation does not cause additional pain or suspected fracture complications, have the patient raise the injured arm above heart level to reduce blood flow to the wound.

8. APPLY A PRESSURE DRESSING: Place a fresh gauze pad or 5-inch by 9-inch ABD combine pad over the initial dressing. Wrap with a 3-inch gauze roll to hold the pads firmly in place and secure the ends with first aid tape. Do not wrap tightly enough to restrict circulation.

9. MANAGE THE SPRAIN: Activate an instant cold compress by squeezing or folding to trigger the cooling reaction. Wrap the compress in a triangular bandage or gauze before applying it to the swollen joint, as direct skin contact is not permitted.

10. IMMOBILIZE THE ARM: Use the second triangular sling to create a supporting arm sling, securing it with the included safety pins. This provides stability, reduces movement, and improves patient comfort while awaiting EMS.

11. TREAT FOR SHOCK: If the patient shows signs of dizziness or faintness, lay them down. Wrap the solar emergency blanket around the patient to retain body heat and prevent hypothermia or shock progression.

12. MONITOR AND EXECUTE EMS HAND-OFF: Continuously monitor the patient's breathing, consciousness, capillary refill, warmth, and finger color in the injured arm. When EMS arrives, provide a concise report covering the mechanism of injury, all treatments rendered, and current patient status.
