Quick Overview

Potable Aqua Germicidal Tablets are iodine-based water purification tablets used by military personnel, SAR teams, and preparedness operators to render microbiologically contaminated field water bacteriologically safe for human consumption when primary filtration systems are unavailable.

The active agent in these tablets is tetraglycine hydroperiodide, which releases titratable iodine when dissolved in water. Iodine penetrates the cell walls of pathogenic bacteria and protozoan cysts such as Giardia lamblia, disrupting metabolic processes and rendering microorganisms inert. The standard deployment dose is two tablets per one quart of water, with a minimum contact time of 35 minutes under standard conditions. In cold water below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or in turbid conditions, contact time must be doubled to 70 minutes to maintain efficacy.

Operators must understand the critical limitations of this purification method before deployment. These tablets are not effective against Cryptosporidium, do not remove sediment or suspended particulates, and provide no neutralization of chemical pollutants, heavy metals, or fuel contamination. Pre-filtration through dense cloth is mandatory for turbid water sources, as particulates can shield microorganisms from the chemical agent and reduce treatment effectiveness. This is a biological threat solution only.

Readiness and storage protocol directly affect field reliability. Tablets must remain in the original sealed amber glass bottle, stored in a cool, dark, and dry environment, as exposure to UV light, moisture, and heat rapidly degrades potency. The manufacturer-indicated shelf life is four years, and one 50-count bottle treats 25 quarts of water, establishing the baseline planning unit as one bottle per individual per 72-hour operational period.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT AND ASSESS YOUR WATER SOURCE: Choose moving water over stagnant sources whenever possible. Prioritize clear, cold water and avoid sources with visible organic matter, industrial runoff, or foul odors.

2. PRE-FILTER TURBID WATER: If the water source is cloudy or contains visible particulates, pour it through a dense cloth such as a bandana, shemagh, or cotton t-shirt into your container before treatment. Skipping this step on turbid water allows particulates to shield microorganisms from the iodine and will reduce treatment effectiveness.

3. HANDLE TABLETS WITH DRY HANDS: Ensure your hands are completely dry before opening the bottle. Moisture introduced into the bottle during handling will begin degrading the remaining tablets immediately.

4. DOSE THE CONTAINER: Drop two tablets directly into one quart or one liter of water. Cap the container tightly after the tablets are in.

5. AGITATE UNTIL DISSOLVED: Shake the container vigorously for a minimum of 60 seconds until the tablets are fully dissolved. Some cloudiness or color change in the water is normal and does not indicate a problem.

6. DECONTAMINATE THE CONTAINER THREADS AND DRINKING SURFACE: Slightly loosen the cap, invert the container, and allow treated water to flow over the cap threads and drinking surface. Re-tighten the cap. This step eliminates untreated water contact points on the container.

7. OBSERVE REQUIRED CONTACT TIME: Allow a minimum of 35 minutes of contact time before consuming. If water temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or the water remains cloudy after pre-filtration, extend contact time to 70 minutes. Do not shorten this window.

8. VERIFY TREATMENT BEFORE CONSUMPTION: A noticeable taste and smell of iodine confirms successful treatment and tablet viability. If no iodine taste or smell is present after the full contact time has elapsed, the tablets may be expired or degraded. Do not consume the water without applying an alternative treatment method such as boiling for one minute.
