Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Model 685OR Cervical Collar Carrying Case is a purpose-built, field-deployable storage system that organizes and protects up to six flat-style cervical spine immobilization collars for immediate access by trained emergency medical and rescue personnel during suspected spinal injury events.

The case is constructed from high-visibility orange Cordura nylon, providing abrasion resistance and moisture protection while reducing time required to locate equipment in a vehicle compartment or on a chaotic scene. A full-length Velcro hook-and-loop flap enables one-handed access with gloved hands in low-light conditions, offering a tactically superior alternative to zipper closures. The main storage compartment measures 26 inches by 10 inches, sized specifically to keep collars flat and prevent structural plastic deformation that would render them ineffective at the point of care.

Deployment follows a three-phase protocol: retrieval and staging at the patient's head, collar sizing and selection while manual in-line stabilization is maintained, and application by a trained team per local medical protocols. After use, the Velcro flap is resealed to protect remaining collars from scene contaminants before the case is returned to its designated storage location. The web carrying handle supports both rapid transport from vehicle to patient side and on-scene staging by hanging the case from a rail or fixture within reach of the rescuer managing the airway and c-spine.

Readiness requires inspection at the beginning of each operational period and after every use. Inspection covers the case exterior, closure system, carrying handle integrity, and full contents inventory confirming collars from Pediatric through Tall Adult are present, undamaged, and stacked in standardized order for rapid size identification.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT BEFORE EVERY OPERATIONAL PERIOD: Examine the Cordura body for tears, punctures, and frayed stitching, paying close attention to seams and handle attachment points. Open and close the Velcro flap to confirm the hook-and-loop material is clean and provides a firm seal along its full length.

2. VERIFY CONTENTS INVENTORY AND CONDITION: Confirm a full standardized set of collars is present, from Pediatric through Tall Adult, stacked in the order: Tall, Regular, Short, No-Neck, Pedi. Inspect each collar for cracks, deformities, or contamination before closing and returning the case to its storage location.

3. RETRIEVE AND STAGE THE CASE: When C-spine immobilization is indicated, retrieve the collar case from the vehicle compartment or medical bag using the web carrying handle. Stage the case at the patient's head where it is accessible to the rescuer maintaining manual in-line stabilization.

4. OPEN THE CASE AND SIZE THE COLLAR: Pull the full-length Velcro flap to open the case with one hand while stabilization is continuously maintained by the primary rescuer. Measure the patient's neck per your established medical protocol and identify the correctly sized collar from the organized stack.

5. REMOVE THE SELECTED COLLAR: Extract only the correct collar from the stack, allowing the remaining collars to stay secured inside the case pocket. Do not remove multiple collars simultaneously; keep unused collars protected from scene contaminants.

6. APPLY THE COLLAR AND RESEAL THE CASE: Apply the selected collar to the patient per your training and all applicable local protocols. Immediately reseal the Velcro flap firmly along its entire length to protect remaining equipment, then return the case to its designated storage location.

7. DECONTAMINATE AFTER EXPOSURE: If the case or any collars are contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials, remove the case from service and follow your agency's exposure control plan. Dispose of any contaminated disposable collars as medical waste and do not attempt to decontaminate and reuse them.

8. CLEAN AND RELOAD FOR NEXT DEPLOYMENT: Wipe the case exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap, or use an agency-approved disinfectant compatible with nylon fabrics. Allow the case to air dry completely, then reload clean inspected collars flat in standardized order before pressing the Velcro flap down firmly along its full length to secure contents. Do not machine wash or machine dry.
