Quick Overview

The R&B Cyli-Strap Model CYL-1 is a 1.5-inch nylon webbing transport strap used by firefighters and rescue operators to carry up to two SCBA cylinders hands-free during high-rise, RIT, confined space, and HazMat operations.

The Cyli-Strap converts two loose, cumbersome cylinders into a single manageable sling load using a girth hitch system formed at each sewn end loop. With a 2,500 lb tensile strength and a fixed 42.5-inch length, the strap positions cylinders at the operator's hip, preserving stride and minimizing ground clearance issues during stairwell movement. The high-visibility red webbing supports rapid identification in low-light and smoke-filled environments, maintaining situational awareness without additional effort.

Attachment requires no knot-tying. Passing the main webbing body back through the sewn end loop forms a self-tightening girth hitch around the cylinder neck below the valve assembly. The weight of the cylinder itself provides the cinching tension, making the connection mechanically secure without relying on operator-tied knots under pressure or with gloved hands.

Deployment protocol follows a five-step sequence: pre-deployment inspection, securing each cylinder via girth hitch, donning the assembly bandolier-style, and doffing by lowering cylinders to release hitch tension. The strap is rated for equipment transport only and must never be used for rappelling, personnel hoisting, or as a safety lanyard. Post-mission inspection and retirement criteria are clearly defined, with a mandatory destruction protocol requiring retired straps to be cut in half.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually and physically inspect the full length of webbing for frays, cuts, burns, or chemical contamination. Examine the stitching on both sewn end loops for broken, pulled, or abraded threads, and confirm the strap is untangled and ready for immediate application.

2. SECURE THE FIRST CYLINDER: Place the first SCBA cylinder upright in a stable position. Pass one sewn end loop underneath the cylinder's valve assembly or integrated handle, then feed the main body of the strap back through that sewn end loop and pull taut to form a girth hitch below the valve assembly.

3. VERIFY THE FIRST HITCH: Confirm the girth hitch is snug and correctly seated around the structural neck of the cylinder, below the main valve assembly. Do not attach to the valve handwheel, pressure gauge, or regulator fittings.

4. SECURE THE SECOND CYLINDER: Repeat the girth hitch process using the opposite sewn end loop on the second cylinder. Confirm both hitches are cinched tight and seated correctly before proceeding to transport.

5. DON THE ASSEMBLY: Position the center of the webbing between the two suspended cylinders. Sling the assembly over one shoulder or across the chest bandolier-style, with cylinders resting at or above hip level.

6. CONFIRM LOAD STABILITY: Verify hands are free and the load is balanced and stable before moving. Utilize stairwell handrails as needed during ascent or descent.

7. DOFF AND STAGE CYLINDERS: Carefully lower both cylinders to the floor to immediately release tension on the girth hitches. Create slack by pushing the webbing back toward each loop, lift the loop off the cylinder neck, and repeat for the second cylinder. Stage cylinders per protocol and stow the Cyli-Strap.
