Quick Overview

The R&B Double Donut Strap is a standardized hose management system that packages 100 feet of 1¾" attack hose into a single, balanced, hands-free load for one-operator transport and deployment in structural, high-rise, and wildland-urban interface fire operations.

The system consolidates two 50-foot donut rolls into a unified pack secured by two adjustable nylon retaining straps with high-shear Velcro closures, connected through a 3-inch solid metal center ring to a shoulder strap. This configuration distributes the load across the operator's torso, freeing both hands to carry forcible entry tools, maintain three points of contact on stairwells, and manage SCBA without compromising hose readiness. The adjustable closures accommodate hose circumferences from 42 to 50 inches to fit various jacket types.

Deployment follows a three-phase protocol covering hose preparation and packing, transport to the objective, and at-objective release. At the standpipe or water source, the operator pulls both Velcro pull tabs in a single decisive motion to release the hose, then immediately clears the empty strap assembly from the path of egress. Clearing the strap is a critical safety step, as the empty assembly presents a significant entanglement and trip hazard in low-visibility environments.

Pre-use inspection is required each shift and covers nylon webbing integrity, stitch condition at all load-bearing connection points, center ring serviceability, and Velcro closure strength. The strap is rated for equipment carry only and must never be used for hoisting, lowering, or securing personnel. Any webbing cut exceeding 10% of width, compromised stitching, ring deformation, or Velcro failure requires immediate removal from service.

Field Application Steps

1. ROLL THE HOSE: Prepare two separate 50-foot sections of 1¾" attack hose into standard donut rolls. Nest the couplings during rolling to prevent damage and snagging during transport.

2. POSITION THE ROLLS: Place the two donut rolls side-by-side on a flat surface. Orient the couplings according to departmental policy.

3. POSITION THE STRAP ASSEMBLY: Lay the opened Double Donut Strap flat on the same surface. Center the paired hose rolls on top of the two retaining straps so the load will be even on both sides of the center ring.

4. SECURE THE LOAD: Wrap one retaining strap tightly around both hose rolls and press the full Velcro contact patch firmly closed. Repeat with the second strap. Confirm there is no slack and no load shifting before lifting.

5. DON THE PACK: Lift the secured hose pack by the shoulder strap and sling it over one shoulder, positioned high on the back or side as dictated by SCBA placement and operator comfort.

6. ASCEND TO THE OBJECTIVE: Proceed to the designated standpipe or water source connection point, using both hands to carry tools or maintain three points of contact on all stairwells. Do not attempt to hold the hose pack in place with your hands during ascent.

7. DROP THE PACK: At the objective, lower the hose pack to the floor. Orient it so the hose will roll out cleanly toward the fire area when released.

8. RELEASE THE HOSE: Firmly grasp the pull tabs on both Velcro retaining straps simultaneously and pull outward in a sharp, decisive motion to release both hose rolls.

9. CLEAR THE STRAP ASSEMBLY: Immediately pull the empty strap assembly clear of the hose and place it against a wall or out of the primary path of travel. This step is not optional. The empty assembly is a trip and entanglement hazard in low-visibility conditions.

10. CONNECT AND ADVANCE: Connect the hose to the standpipe outlet or water source. Flake out the hose as needed to eliminate kinks and prepare for entry upon receiving the order to charge the line.
