Quick Overview

The R&B Econo Turnout Gear Bag (Model 198FF-XL) is a high-capacity structural firefighting PPE transport system designed for firefighters who need to consolidate, protect, and move a complete ensemble between home, station, and training sites.

The 198FF-XL is built around a 5,200 cubic inch main compartment measuring 24 inches by 16 inches by 13.5 inches, constructed from Cordura nylon with a urethane-coated interior backing. This configuration provides abrasion resistance against concrete and apparatus surfaces while protecting contents from light moisture and damp ground contact. The 1.5-inch webbing handles are routed underneath the bag body to distribute load across the full fabric structure, accommodating the 45 to 75 pound weight range of a complete structural PPE set without seam failure.

Deployment readiness depends on a disciplined loading protocol and pre-use inspection. The systematic loading sequence, boots at the base, bunker pants next, turnout coat above, and helmet on top with ancillary items filling voids, maximizes space efficiency and protects delicate components such as face shields from contact damage. The YKK Number 10 self-repairing zipper resists grit-induced jamming and allows field correction if separation occurs during transport.

This bag is rated for clean or decontaminated PPE only. The urethane coating resists light moisture but is not waterproof and will not protect against submersion or driving rain. The Cordura nylon body is not fire-resistant and must never be exposed to open flame, embers, or high-temperature surfaces. Storage and transport of soiled or grossly contaminated gear inside this bag creates cross-contamination risk and degrades material integrity over time.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-LOADING INSPECTION: Fully unzip and open the main compartment. Visually inspect the interior for debris, moisture, or damage and confirm the bag is clean and dry before loading any PPE.

2. HANDLE AND ZIPPER CHECK: Inspect the 1.5-inch webbing handles at all stitched attachment points for fraying or separation. Cycle the YKK zipper fully open and fully closed once to confirm smooth, snag-free operation.

3. LOAD BOOTS AS BASE LAYER: Place boots at the bottom of the main compartment, soles down, oriented heel-to-toe. This creates a flat, stable base that supports the remaining gear load.

4. LOAD BUNKER PANTS: Fold bunker pants using the accordion or roll method and lay flat on top of the boots. Keep the fold tight to preserve available space for remaining items.

5. LOAD TURNOUT COAT: Fold the turnout coat and place it on top of the pants. Secure all hardware including snaps and clips before loading to prevent snagging on the bag interior or adjacent gear.

6. LOAD HELMET: Place the helmet on top of the turnout coat. Orient face shields inward, facing toward the coat, to protect lens surfaces from contact scratches during transport.

7. LOAD ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT: Place gloves, structural hood, and any small items into the voids around the helmet and along the sides of the bag. Use available space efficiently without forcing the zipper.

8. SECURE AND CLOSE: Close the main compartment zipper fully around the entire track. Confirm no fabric, gear straps, or hardware are caught in the zipper path before applying full tension.

9. TRANSPORT: Grasp both webbing handles together with one hand for a balanced carry. Lift with the legs, not the back, given the loaded weight range of 45 to 75 pounds.
