Quick Overview

The R&B Extra-Large Turnout Gear Bag is a 5,200 cubic inch, Cordura nylon PPE transport and staging system used by structural firefighters, technical rescue operators, and hazmat personnel to protect, organize, and rapidly deploy a complete turnout ensemble between station, apparatus, and incident scene.

The bag's single-cavity main compartment is engineered around one operational priority: speed. The 16-inch vertical clearance allows a structural helmet to be placed brim-up on top of folded gear without compressing the visor or mounted accessories. The #10 YKK self-repairing zipper is specified for gloved-hand operation, and the continuous wrap-around reinforced webbing handles distribute the full weight of a wet turnout ensemble across the bag's chassis without seam failure.

Contamination control is a built-in capability consideration, not an afterthought. The Cordura nylon body resists moisture and abrasion during apparatus transport and fireground staging, but this bag is not a sealed containment system. For grossly contaminated PPE involving bodily fluids, chemical agents, or asbestos, departmental protocol requires an inner sealed bag to prevent cross-contamination of the duffel, vehicle, and storage areas.

The bag supports four approved operational contexts: structural firefighting, technical rescue and USAR, hazmat operations, and extended wildland or emergency management deployments. Its clear window ID slot enables positive asset identification in multi-unit scenarios and is a required pre-loading step, not optional. Post-use inspection of seams, handles, fabric, and the zipper track is mandatory after every operational exposure to fireground contaminants or heavy loads.

Field Application Steps

1. VERIFY ID CARD: Before loading any gear, confirm your identification card is legible, accurate, and properly seated in the clear window ID slot. This is a pre-deployment step, not an optional task.

2. INSPECT AND CLEAR THE BAG: Fully open the main compartment and conduct a visual and physical inspection of the interior. Remove all debris, dirt, or foreign objects from previous use and confirm the interior is dry.

3. INSPECT SEAMS, HANDLES, FABRIC, AND ZIPPER: Pull firmly on each reinforced webbing handle to check for separation or tearing at attachment points. Check the body for rips or significant abrasion, then operate the zipper along its full length to confirm smooth function and no missing teeth.

4. APPLY DECONTAMINATION PROTOCOL IF REQUIRED: If gear is contaminated from an incident, adhere to all departmental and jurisdictional decontamination procedures, including Gross Decon, before stowing any equipment. If SOP requires it, place grossly contaminated gear into a separate sealed disposable bag before loading into the duffel.

5. ESTABLISH THE BASE LAYER WITH BOOTS: Place boots upright, soles down, at the bottom of the bag. The bag's width is designed to accommodate two boots side by side.

6. LOAD BUNKER TROUSERS: Fold the bunker pants neatly and lay them flat directly over the boots, creating a stable base layer for the coat.

7. LOAD THE TURNOUT COAT: Fold the turnout coat and place it on top of the pants. This creates a flat, stable platform rated to support the helmet without shifting.

8. POSITION THE HELMET: Place the helmet brim-up directly on top of the folded coat. The 16-inch vertical clearance is designed specifically for this step and prevents damage to the visor, brim, or any mounted accessories.

9. STOW ACCESSORIES: Place the flash hood, gloves, and other small items inside the helmet bowl or in the voids alongside the coat to maximize use of available volume.

10. SECURE THE COMPARTMENT: Pull the #10 YKK zipper fully closed along its entire track to protect contents from dust, moisture, and contamination during transport.

11. POST-USE CLEANING: Turn the bag inside out and remove loose debris with a stiff brush. Scrub contaminated areas with a soft-bristle brush and mild soap solution, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Do not use bleach, harsh chemical detergents, or a machine dryer.

12. STORE FOR READINESS: Store the clean, dry bag in a climate-controlled environment away from direct UV light and ozone sources such as electric motors to preserve fabric integrity and webbing structural strength.
