Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications 6-Pocket Individual Pannier is a rapid-access medical supply management system designed for bicycle-mounted first responders, including EMS, law enforcement, and event medical teams operating in environments where ambulance access is limited or impossible.

The pannier's core capability is enforced supply organization through six clear-view pockets, three on the main flap interior and three on the rear wall, allowing an operator to visually identify contents without opening individual pockets. This design directly reduces time-to-treatment during high-stress patient contact. The rigid internal structure prevents sagging into bicycle wheel spokes, and the 1000 Denier Cordura exterior provides field-ready resistance to abrasion, tearing, and punctures common in urban and event environments.

Loadout protocol follows M.A.R.C.H. alignment. Flap pockets carry highest-priority hemorrhage control supplies including tourniquets, pressure dressings, hemostatic gauze, and chest seals. The top rear pocket stages airway adjuncts, the middle rear pocket holds circulation supplies, and the bottom rear pocket contains diagnostics and miscellaneous tools. This segmented deployment structure means the right supply is always in the right location when seconds matter.

Mounting uses a three-point system: inverted J-hooks for primary weight-bearing, a bungee S-hook for downward tension, and the detachable #1312 stability strap for lateral control. Operators must complete a function check before every deployment by vigorously rocking the pannier side-to-side and up-and-down to confirm secure attachment. Improperly secured mounting hardware can allow the pannier to contact wheel spokes, causing catastrophic bicycle failure.

Field Application Steps

1. STAGE YOUR LOADOUT BEFORE DEPLOYMENT: Load flap pockets with highest-priority hemorrhage control supplies: tourniquets, pressure dressings, hemostatic gauze, and chest seals. These must be accessible the instant the main flap opens. Load the top rear pocket with airway adjuncts (NPAs, OPAs, pocket mask), the middle rear pocket with circulation supplies (IV materials if within scope of practice), and the bottom rear pocket with diagnostics and miscellaneous items such as gloves, shears, penlight, BP cuff, and gauze.

2. CONFIRM VISUAL IDENTIFICATION BEFORE CLOSING: Close all pockets, open the main flap, and verify that all critical items are visible through the clear vinyl without unzipping any internal pocket. Check for fabric snags or obstructions that could interfere with the main zipper during an emergency access event.

3. SEAT THE J-HOOKS ON THE CARGO RACK: Select the correct left or right pannier configuration for your rack setup. Firmly seat both inverted J-hooks over the top side rail of the bicycle cargo rack and confirm full engagement of both hooks before proceeding.

4. APPLY DOWNWARD TENSION WITH THE BUNGEE S-HOOK: Stretch the bungee cord downward and secure the metal S-hook to a low point on the cargo rack. The bungee must be under active tension to prevent the pannier from bouncing or swinging during movement. A slack bungee provides no stabilization.

5. SECURE LATERAL STABILITY WITH THE #1312 STRAP: Route the detachable #1312 nylon stability strap around a vertical frame member on the rack. Secure both snap closures and pull the strap taut to eliminate all lateral slack. This step is critical during aggressive riding, cornering, and uneven terrain.

6. PERFORM A FUNCTION CHECK BEFORE RIDING: Vigorously rock the fully loaded pannier side-to-side and up-and-down. It must remain firmly attached with minimal movement. Do not ride until the pannier passes this check. An unsecured pannier can contact the wheel spokes and cause catastrophic bicycle failure.

7. ACCESS SUPPLIES ON SCENE: Dismount and position the bicycle with the medical pannier facing you. Stabilize the bicycle with the kickstand or lay it down with the pannier facing up. Flip up the storm flap if needed, then unzip the main compartment using the #10 YKK zippers.

8. RETRIEVE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED: Open the main flap fully and visually identify the required item through the clear vinyl. Open only the specific pocket containing that item. Unnecessary pocket access slows treatment and disrupts loadout integrity for subsequent retrieval.

9. CONDUCT POST-INCIDENT INVENTORY AND RESTOCK: After the incident, use the clear-view pockets to conduct a rapid visual sweep of all six pockets and identify all expended supplies. Replace used items in their designated pockets before the next deployment to maintain loadout integrity.

10. CLEAN AND INSPECT AFTER EACH OPERATIONAL USE: Wipe the vinyl back with medical-grade disinfectant wipes. Clean the Cordura exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. Air dry completely before reloading. Inspect J-hooks for cracks, the bungee cord for elasticity loss, the S-hook for deformation, and the #1312 strap snaps for function. Remove from service if any mounting component is compromised.
