Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications "The Roller" wheeled gear bag is a high-capacity, mobile PPE transport system used by firefighters, traveling instructors, and deployed personnel to move full structural ensembles and mission-critical equipment without incurring operator fatigue or musculoskeletal injury.

The Roller is built around a 6,000 cubic inch main compartment constructed from 1000 Denier Cordura fabric with a urethane interior coating that resists water, oil, and abrasion. A polypropylene internal skeleton maintains the bag's shape under load, enables vertical freestanding storage, and protects contents from compression damage. Elevated base rails provide two inches of clearance from the ground when the bag is horizontal, keeping fabric off wet or contaminated surfaces.

The mobility system centers on a multistage aluminum telescoping handle that extends to a locked 44 inches and is deployed via a top-mounted push-button. The handle is a towing component only and must never be used for lifting. All lifting operations require the integrated nylon webbing carry handles, which are the designated load-bearing points for curbs, stairs, and vehicle loading.

An isolated zippered end pocket separates clean or sensitive items such as an SCBA facepiece, documents, or personal clothing from potentially soiled PPE in the main compartment. Fully loaded, the bag can exceed 60 pounds, making proper load distribution and packing sequence critical to safe deployment. Grossly contaminated equipment must be sealed in a hazmat or vapor-barrier bag before placement inside The Roller.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-USE INSPECTION: Inspect the Cordura fabric exterior for abrasions, rips, or tears, focusing on corners and the base. Extend and retract the telescoping handle to confirm the locking mechanism engages correctly, and check wheels for cracks, debris, and free spin.

2. OPEN AND STAGE THE BAG: Place the bag on a flat surface and fully unzip the U-shaped main compartment zipper. Confirm the interior is clean and dry before loading any gear.

3. DISTRIBUTE LOAD BY WEIGHT: Place the heaviest items, such as boots and helmet, at the wheel-end of the bag to lower the center of gravity and increase towing stability. This positioning prevents the bag from tipping during transit.

4. PACK IN OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE: Load coat and pants on top of the heavy items. If rapid donning is expected on arrival, pack all garments in reverse donning order so the first item needed comes out first.

5. ISOLATE SENSITIVE ITEMS: Place the SCBA facepiece in its protective pouch and stow it in the zippered end pocket. This compartment prevents cross-contamination between soiled PPE and clean or sensitive equipment.

6. SECURE ALL COMPARTMENTS: Close all zippers completely and confirm no fabric or material is caught in zipper tracks. Do not force zippers closed over a load exceeding 6,000 cubic inches, as overstuffing will damage zipper teeth and sliders.

7. ENGAGE THE TELESCOPING HANDLE: Depress the locking button and pull the handle upward until it extends fully to 44 inches and locks into position. Tilt the bag forward onto its wheels and maintain a firm grip, especially at corners and surface thresholds.

8. NEGOTIATE OBSTACLES CORRECTLY: At curbs, stairs, or vehicle loading points, fully retract the telescoping handle before lifting. Use the nylon webbing carry handles for all lifting, applying proper mechanics by loading force through the legs, not the back.

9. STORE THE BAG CORRECTLY: Fully retract the telescoping handle to reduce footprint and prevent damage. Stand the bag upright on its non-wheel end for vertical storage, or lay it flat so the base rails keep the main fabric off the floor.

10. POST-USE CLEANING AND DRYING: Remove loose debris with a stiff brush and clean soiled areas with mild soap and water applied with a cloth. Air dry completely with all compartments open before storing. Do not machine wash, machine dry, or use bleach or solvents, as these will destroy the urethane coating and degrade the fabric.
