Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Model 430BK Gas Mask Thigh Rig is a dedicated thigh-mounted carrier designed for law enforcement, military, and industrial operators who require immediate, hands-free access to a full-face respirator or gas mask in CBRN and hazardous material environments.

The 430BK positions a fully assembled respirator, filter canister attached and ready-to-don, directly on the operator's body outside of a primary pack. Its 475 cubic inch main compartment accommodates most standard full-face respirators including the AV-3000 and C50. The 1000D Cordura nylon body, web-reinforced hems, and dual Nexus side-release buckles are engineered for gloved-hand operation under stress, making deployment in seconds a realistic field outcome rather than a training room assumption.

The thigh-rig configuration preserves critical real estate on the duty belt and chest rig for munitions, communications equipment, and medical gear. A 1.5-inch web belt drop interfaces with any standard load-bearing or duty belt via side-release buckle, and a 1.5-inch adjustable leg strap anchors the carrier to the upper thigh to eliminate movement and shift during running, climbing, or kneeling. Proper fit is confirmed through a mobility test before any operational deployment.

Operator readiness depends entirely on proper mask staging and consistent training. The head harness must be configured before stowing so it can be grasped and deployed without snagging. The manual identifies a tangled harness as a critical failure point with potentially lethal consequences in a contaminated atmosphere. Proficiency requires repeated drills with gloved hands and under low-light conditions to build the muscle memory required for effective deployment under duress.

Field Application Steps

1. MOUNT TO BELT: Attach the 1.5-inch web belt drop to your duty or load-bearing belt on your support side. Confirm placement allows full range of motion without interfering with your sidearm draw or access to other critical equipment.

2. SECURE TO THIGH: Fasten the 1.5-inch adjustable leg strap around your upper thigh and cinch until the bag is stable and does not slide or rotate on the leg. The strap must be firm but must not restrict blood flow.

3. CONDUCT MOBILITY TEST: Perform squats and dynamic movements to verify carrier stability. The bag must not swing excessively during movement. Re-adjust the leg strap and belt drop position as necessary before loading the mask.

4. OPEN THE CARRIER AND PREPARE THE MASK: Disengage both Nexus side-release buckles and lift the top flap. Conduct a function check on the respirator per unit protocol, confirm the filter is securely seated, and verify the head harness is properly configured and untangled.

5. STOW THE MASK: Place the mask into the main compartment per your unit SOP orientation. Critically, stage the head harness so it can be grasped and extracted in a single motion without snagging on the carrier or the mask body.

6. SECURE THE CARRIER: Close the top flap and fasten both Nexus buckles. Pull on the flap to confirm positive engagement of both buckles before any operational activity.

7. IDENTIFY THE THREAT AND INITIATE DEPLOYMENT: Upon the verbal command "GAS, GAS, GAS" or personal identification of a respiratory hazard, move your support hand directly to the thigh rig and initiate the deployment sequence without hesitation.

8. ACCESS AND OPEN UNDER DURESS: Locate and depress both Nexus buckles simultaneously. Sweep the top flap up and away from the bag in a single, positive motion to clear the opening completely.

9. EXTRACT AND DON THE MASK: Establish a firm grip on the mask and harness as previously staged and withdraw the respirator from the carrier. Proceed immediately with standard mask-donning procedures. Do not attempt to re-secure the empty carrier until the immediate threat has passed.

10. CONDUCT PRE-OPERATIONAL INSPECTION: Before each operation, inspect all stitching at the belt loop, leg strap attachment points, and flap corners for fraying or separation. Manipulate both Nexus buckles to confirm audible click engagement, check D-rings for deformation, inspect webbing for cuts or abrasion, and examine the Cordura body for punctures, rips, or chemical contamination.

11. PERFORM POST-OPERATIONAL MAINTENANCE: Empty the bag and brush out all dirt and debris after each use. For heavy soiling, clean with a nylon brush, water, and mild detergent. Do not machine wash or use bleach. Air dry the carrier completely before re-inserting a mask or placing it in storage.
