Quick Overview

The R&B Gripper Hose System (Model GRP-57-SB) is a professional-grade hose transport and rapid deployment system designed for trained fire-rescue personnel to carry up to 150 feet of 1¾" attack line hands-free and release the full load instantaneously at the point of deployment.

The GRP-57-SB is built around three core components that work as an integrated system: three seatbelt-grade webbing straps rated to 2,400 lb tensile strength, three automotive-style seatbelt buckles with large red push-button releases engineered for single-handed gloved operation, and a 27-inch semi-rigid spine that maintains correct strap spacing and prevents the bundle from shifting or accordioning during dynamic movement. A padded shoulder sling distributes the hose load across the torso, enabling hands-free ascent through stairwells while the operator retains both hands for tools and balance. The system accommodates bundle circumferences from 14 to 44 inches, covering the full range of standard attack line configurations.

The system is optimized for three operational contexts. The primary application is structural firefighting, specifically high-rise operations and stairwell advancements where a pre-connected 150-foot attack line must be transported to the fire floor with minimal fatigue and maximum speed. Secondary applications include Rapid Intervention Team operations requiring transport of supplemental air lines or tag lines, where the quick-release capability provides immediate equipment access. Tertiary applications cover wildland and industrial environments requiring progressive hose lays over difficult terrain.

Readiness for this system depends on disciplined inspection and sustainment protocols. Operators must perform a visual and tactile inspection before each use, actuating every buckle for positive lock and checking all webbing for cuts, burns, abrasions, or discoloration. After fireground exposure, the system requires hand-washing with mild soap and water, complete air drying in shade, and storage away from direct sunlight, fuels, and chemicals. Any system with frayed webbing, cracked buckles, or non-functioning hardware must be removed from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. PREPARE THE HOSE LOAD: Lay out 150 feet of 1¾" hose and form a Cleveland Load, Accordion Load, or department-approved bundle. Position the nozzle and coupling according to your department's standard procedures.

2. POSITION THE SYSTEM: Lay the Gripper Hose System flat on the ground with the padded shoulder sling oriented to the top. Center the prepared hose bundle onto the semi-rigid spine, between all three securing straps.

3. SECURE AND CLICK ALL THREE STRAPS: Encircle the bundle with each strap and insert the male buckle end into the female receptacle until a distinct audible and tactile click is confirmed. Verify that all three red release buttons face outward, away from the bundle.

4. COMPRESS AND STOW EXCESS WEBBING: Pull each strap firmly to compress the bundle so that no significant movement is possible. Tuck all excess webbing under the tightened strap to eliminate snag and trip hazards before entering the hazard zone.

5. DON THE SYSTEM AND VERIFY FIT: Hoist the secured bundle and place the padded shoulder sling over the shoulder and across the torso. Adjust for load distribution and confirm there is no interference with SCBA straps, the PASS device, or the radio.

6. ORIENT BUCKLES AWAY FROM THE BODY: Before advancing, confirm that all three buckle faces are oriented away from the body. This minimizes the risk of accidental release when maneuvering through doorways or confined stairwell spaces.

7. ADVANCE HANDS-FREE TO THE OBJECTIVE: Proceed to the designated deployment point with both hands free for tools such as irons or a hook and for maintaining balance on stairs.

8. POSITION THE BUNDLE AT THE DROP POINT: Arrive at the designated release point, such as the hallway outside the fire apartment door. Place the bundle on the ground oriented for immediate flaking in the direction of advancement.

9. RELEASE ALL THREE BUCKLES IN RAPID SUCCESSION: Using one hand, firmly depress the red release button on each of the three buckles in sequence. All three straps release instantaneously.

10. CLEAR THE SYSTEM FROM THE HOSE LINE: Immediately pull the entire Gripper Hose System clear of the hose bundle to prevent entanglement when the line is charged. Proceed with standard hose flaking and advancement to the fire.
