Quick Overview

The R&B Health Safety Kit Bag is a professional-grade vinyl containment system used by firefighters, HazMat technicians, EMS personnel, and SAR technicians to isolate contaminated PPE at incident scenes and transport it safely to a decontamination facility.

The bag's primary containment capability is built around a 22 oz. non-porous vinyl body reinforced with a Tuff Bottom panel designed to withstand abrasion from asphalt and concrete without compromising the barrier. A #10 YKK heavy-duty nylon zipper provides the closure system and is sized for reliable operation by gloved hands. A fully closed zipper is the critical control point for effective contamination management. The bag is designed to hold one complete set of structural firefighting PPE and must not be over-stuffed, as excess load places failure-level stress on seams and the zipper track.

Deployment follows a four-phase protocol: staging the bag in the clean zone adjacent to the doffing area, systematically bagging each PPE item without throwing or dropping to prevent aerosolization of contaminants, sealing and transporting the bag in an exterior apparatus compartment only, and delivering it directly to the designated decontamination area upon return to quarters. The sealed bag exterior must be treated as contaminated, and operators handling it must wear utility gloves at minimum until the bag itself has been decontaminated.

Post-use sustainment requires washing all interior and exterior surfaces with an approved disinfecting solution, rinsing thoroughly, and air drying completely. High-heat dryers are prohibited as heat degrades the vinyl material. Any bag with a material breach or failed zipper must be removed from service immediately and marked OUT OF SERVICE. Unauthorized field repairs using materials such as duct tape are prohibited, as they cannot guarantee a non-porous seal.

Field Application Steps

1. STAGE THE BAG: Retrieve the clean, empty Health Safety Kit Bag from its stored location on the apparatus and place it open in a designated cold or clean zone adjacent to the doffing area. If possible, set it on a clean surface or disposable barrier to protect the bag exterior from ground-level contamination.

2. DON GLOVES BEFORE CONTACT: Ensure you are wearing utility gloves at minimum before handling the open bag or any contaminated PPE. The bag exterior must be treated as a contaminated surface once gear has been loaded.

3. DOFF GEAR IN PRESCRIBED SEQUENCE: Remove PPE following your department's established doffing protocol. Do not improvise the sequence, as improper doffing increases cross-contamination risk to skin and clothing.

4. BAG EACH ITEM SYSTEMATICALLY: Place each piece of PPE directly into the open bag without throwing or dropping items, as impact can aerosolize contaminants. Load heavier and bulkier items first, including coat, pants, and boots, then place smaller ensemble items such as helmet, hood, and gloves on top.

5. CLEAR SHARP OBJECTS BEFORE SEALING: Before closing the bag, confirm that all sharp tools or objects have been removed from gear pockets. The vinyl body is puncture-resistant, not puncture-proof, and a breach in containment compromises the entire operation.

6. SEAL AND VERIFY CLOSURE: With gloved hands, close the #10 YKK zipper completely along its full track. Visually and physically confirm a positive seal with no gaps or separation before moving the bag.

7. TRANSPORT TO EXTERIOR COMPARTMENT ONLY: Using the 2-inch web handles or the attached shoulder strap, carry the sealed bag to the apparatus and stow it in a designated exterior compartment. Never place the sealed bag inside the passenger cab of any vehicle.

8. DELIVER DIRECTLY TO DECONTAMINATION AREA: Upon return to quarters, transport the bag directly to the designated PPE decontamination area. Do not route through living quarters, administrative offices, or any shared facility space.

9. DECONTAMINATE THE BAG AFTER EMPTYING: After unloading gear in the appropriate area, wash all interior and exterior bag surfaces with an approved department cleaning and disinfecting solution, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and hang the bag to air dry completely. Do not use high-heat dryers.

10. INSPECT BEFORE RETURNING TO SERVICE: Once dry, conduct a full inspection of the vinyl body, seams, reinforced bottom, zipper, webbing handles, and shoulder strap attachment points. Any rip, puncture, tear, zipper failure, or frayed webbing requires immediate removal from service and marking as OUT OF SERVICE per department supply chain protocol.
