Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Model 440 Hydrant Tool Bag is a hose-mounted tactical tool carrier used by engine company personnel to ensure hydrant wrenches, adapters, and valves travel with the supply line coupling to the hydrant on every deployment.

The Model 440 mounts directly to the supply hose via two integrated 2-inch webbing straps with full-length heavy-duty Velcro hook-and-loop fasteners, securing the bag 12 to 18 inches behind the male coupling. The 14-ounce yellow vinyl construction provides a water-impervious barrier against road grime and weather while maintaining high-visibility identification in low-light conditions. The bag measures 22 inches in length by 16 inches in circumference, accommodating a standardized loadout without exceeding closure capacity.

Deployment is designed for zero additional cognitive load on the hydrant firefighter. When the supply line is pulled from the hose bed, the tool bag travels with the coupling automatically. At the hydrant, the Velcro flap opens with a single pull, providing immediate access even with structural firefighting gloves, eliminating the critical failure point of arriving at the hydrant without the tools needed to make the connection.

Readiness sustainment requires daily security checks to verify strap integrity and contents verification to confirm the correct tool complement is staged. Post-use maintenance includes soap-and-water cleaning of the vinyl, stiff-brush clearing of Velcro surfaces to maintain full adhesion, and complete air drying before returning the apparatus to service. Any compromise to webbing or seams requires immediate removal from service.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT MOUNTING LOCATION: Identify the male coupling end of the supply hose to be deployed to the hydrant. The bag will mount on this end of the line so it travels with the coupling during hose pull.

2. POSITION THE BAG: Place the empty bag on the hose 12 to 18 inches behind the male coupling. This keeps the bag accessible at the hydrant while remaining clear of the connection point during hookup.

3. SECURE THE MOUNTING STRAPS: Wrap both 2-inch webbing straps tightly around the hose. Pull each strap to cinch firmly and engage the maximum Velcro surface area. Verify the bag cannot rotate or slide freely along the hose.

4. LOAD THE TOOL COMPLEMENT: Insert the department-specified hydrant tool loadout, including one hydrant wrench, one Storz-to-thread adapter, and any required spanners or reducers. Do not overload the bag. The top flap must close and seal completely.

5. SECURE THE CLOSURE FLAP: Press the top flap down firmly across its entire length. Confirm the Velcro is fully engaged with no gaps or lifted edges that could allow tools to shift during deployment.

6. STAGE THE HOSE: Re-pack the loaded hose into the hose bed. Position the tool bag to minimize snagging on apparatus components when the line is pulled at the scene.

7. PULL AND DEPLOY AT THE HYDRANT: At the scene, pull the supply line from the hose bed. The tool bag travels with the coupling to the hydrant automatically. Place the coupling on the ground, open the flap with a single pull, and remove the tools needed to operate the hydrant and complete the connection.

8. MANAGE THE BAG DURING OPERATIONS: Leave the bag attached to the hose line throughout operations. When empty, it presents no operational interference to the charged line.

9. ACCOUNT FOR ALL TOOLS AT RECOVERY: Before reloading the hose, conduct a full inventory of all tools removed from the bag. Return every item to the bag before draining and reloading the line.

10. INSPECT AND DECONTAMINATE AT THE STATION: Once back at the station, inspect the vinyl for rips, tears, or punctures and check webbing for fraying or stitching failure. Clean with soap and water, clear debris from Velcro surfaces with a stiff brush, and air dry completely before returning the apparatus to service.
