Quick Overview

The R&B IV Module is a self-contained vascular access sub-kit designed to organize, protect, and rapidly deploy intravenous and intraosseous supplies for Advanced Life Support providers operating in austere or high-stress field environments.

The module is built around a 1000 Denier Cordura nylon body with a heavy-duty #8 YKK zipper engineered for gloved-hand operation. Its color-coded exterior in red or royal blue enables rapid sub-kit retrieval within a multi-pouch primary bag, aligning with agency color-coding protocols. Internal organization is achieved through a main cavity measuring 12.5 inches by 8 inches for fluid bags, slot pockets for IV administration sets and tubing, and elastic retention loops that segregate catheters by gauge from 14g through 22g for immediate visual identification under pressure.

Deployment protocol follows a five-step sequence: module retrieval by color identification, workspace establishment, component selection and preparation, procedure execution, and secure stow before patient transport. The module is designed to support approximately one to three IV setups per loadout and integrates directly into a larger primary medical bag as a dedicated, always-ready vascular access station. Its layout is intended to reduce time-on-task during fluid resuscitation in chaotic, low-light, or time-critical scenarios.

Readiness sustainment requires a mandatory pre-deployment inspection each operational period covering exterior fabric integrity, zipper function, elastic loop tension, inventory count against the agency load list, and verification of expiration dates and sterile packaging on all disposables. Post-use resupply must be completed immediately following any call where supplies were consumed, with full documentation per agency policy before the module is returned to the primary response bag.

Field Application Steps

1. MODULE IDENTIFICATION AND RETRIEVAL: Locate the IV Module within the primary medical bag using its color-coded exterior. Verbally direct a partner to retrieve it or physically pull the entire module and move it to the patient's side.

2. ESTABLISH WORKSPACE: Place the closed module on a stable, relatively clean surface such as a turnout coat, backboard, or stretcher. Fully unzip and lay the module open, transforming it into an organized, accessible workspace for the procedure.

3. COMPONENT SELECTION AND PREPARATION: Visually scan all components. For a large-bore access scenario, select two catheters of 14g or 16g from the elastic retention loops and remove one 1000ml Normal Saline bag from the main cavity along with a 10 gtts/ml administration set from the slot pockets.

4. SPIKE AND PRIME: Spike the fluid bag with the administration set spike port. Prime the tubing completely, purging all air, and prepare all start kit components including tourniquet, antiseptic, and securement tape before initiating venipuncture.

5. EXECUTE VENIPUNCTURE: Perform venipuncture and establish IV access according to your training and your local medical director's protocols. Confirm catheter placement and secure the line before initiating fluid administration.

6. SECURE AND STOW: Set all opened or used sharps aside immediately for transfer to an approved puncture-proof sharps container. Do not return any used or contaminated items to the module. Secure all unused equipment back into retention loops and slot pockets, then zip the module completely shut before patient transport to prevent equipment loss en route.

7. POST-USE RESUPPLY: Following the call, remove the module from the primary response bag and place it in the designated resupply area. Remove any opened or partially used items, restock all consumed components on a one-for-one basis from station supply, and perform a full readiness inspection before returning the module to service. Document use and resupply per agency policy.
