The R&B Original Ladder Boot is a passive safety device used by fire apparatus crews to protect personnel from blunt force impact injuries and warn following vehicle traffic by covering the protruding ends of externally-mounted ladders and equipment.

The Ladder Boot addresses two operational hazards present on any apparatus carrying externally-mounted ladders: accidental contact injuries to ground personnel working around the rig, and low-visibility exposure to following vehicle traffic. Its Cordura nylon shell provides resistance to abrasion, UV exposure, moisture, and road debris, while a high-density impact foam core absorbs and dissipates energy upon contact. A retroreflective "STAY BACK" strip sewn onto the rear-facing surface acts as a passive warning system during nighttime operations. Deployment supports departmental compliance with NFPA 1901 apparatus safety recommendations.

The attachment and retention system is built around a 2-inch webbing strap routed around a solid anchor point such as a rung or beam, secured by a double-shear Velcro lock on both sides of the strap flap. This configuration resists peeling and wind forces during transit. Correct sizing is critical to secure retention: the Medium fits a single roof ladder, the Large fits a standard extension and roof ladder combination, and the X-Large accommodates larger multi-ladder stacks. A boot that is oversized for the stack cannot be adequately secured and presents a projectile detachment hazard at speed.

Sustainment protocol requires daily and weekly inspection of physical security, Velcro integrity, webbing and stitching condition, shell and foam integrity, and reflective strip visibility. Cleaning requires mild soap, water, and complete air drying before reinstallation. Any boot with failed Velcro, compromised webbing, failed stitching, or exposed foam must be removed from service immediately.
