Quick Overview

A large rope bag is a field-deployable containment device used by rescue technicians, riggers, and public safety personnel to store, transport, and rapidly deploy 500 to 600 feet of 5/8" life-safety or utility rope in large-scale technical rescue operations.

The R&B Fabrications Model 236 is purpose-built for operations where standard-capacity bags fall short, including structural collapse, high-angle rescue, marine, and industrial rigging scenarios. Its 17" diameter by 15" height profile lowers the center of gravity for stability on uneven terrain, while the Cordura nylon body provides high abrasion and puncture resistance against sharp edges and UV radiation during staging and transport. The drawstring top closure fully encloses the rope to block debris, dirt, grit, and moisture from contaminating the line between deployment cycles.

The bag's bottom grommet serves two distinct functions critical to field readiness. As a rope anchor point, it physically tethers the bitter end via a stopper knot, providing a clear tactile and visual end-of-line indicator and preventing accidental full-line deployment over an edge. As a drainage port, it allows water to evacuate in swiftwater, marine, and decontamination environments, reducing water weight accumulation and mitigating rope degradation from sustained moisture exposure.

The Model 236 is classified as a containment device only. It is not a load-bearing component of any life-safety system and must never be used as an anchor point, a rigging component, or a personal equipment pack. A fully loaded bag can exceed 60 pounds, requiring proper lifting protocol and a dedicated equipment haul line for any vertical transport evolution.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE BAG: Perform a tactile and visual inspection of the fabric body for rips, tears, punctures, and UV degradation. Check all stitching seams, the handle attachment points, the base, the grommet for deformation or sharp edges, and the interior for debris or moisture.

2. ANCHOR THE ROPE: Take one end of the rope and feed it from the inside of the bag outward through the bottom grommet, leaving sufficient length on the exterior to tie a secure stopper knot.

3. TIE THE STOPPER KNOT: On the outside of the bag, tie a Figure-Eight on a Bight or barrel knot large enough that it cannot pass back through the grommet. Pull firmly from inside the bag to fully seat the knot against the grommet. This step is non-negotiable.

4. STUFF THE ROPE: Place the bag on the ground and feed rope into the interior, allowing it to flake and settle randomly. Do not coil the rope. Coiling induces twists and memory into the line, causing kinks and catastrophic fouling during rapid deployment.

5. SECURE FOR TRANSPORT: Pull the drawstring tight to fully close the top opening and secure the excess cord to prevent snagging during movement.

6. TRANSPORT AND STAGE THE BAG: Carry using the 2-inch web handle. For long distances, sling the handle over a shoulder. At the deployment site, place the bag on a flat, stable surface near the anchor point or deployment edge and confirm it cannot be kicked or displaced over the edge.

7. ORIENT THE BAG: Position the bag with the top opening facing the intended direction of rope deployment before opening.

8. CONNECT THE WORKING END: Open the drawstring top and pull out the working end of the rope. Connect it to the anchor system or prepare it for the intended rigging evolution.

9. CLEAR THE PAYOUT PATH: Before paying out any rope, verify that the entire path from the bag to the deployment point is clear of all obstructions that could cause the line to foul or abrade.

10. DEPLOY: Pay out rope as needed. The stuffing method ensures smooth feed with minimal friction or kinking. Monitor tension at the grommet end. Increased resistance at the bitter end is the tactile indicator that you are approaching end-of-line.

11. POST-USE SUSTAINMENT: After the evolution, remove the rope completely from the bag for independent inspection and drying. Clean the bag with fresh water and mild soap if soiled, rinse thoroughly, and hang it upside down to air dry completely through the bottom grommet before storage.
