Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Medium Rope Bag (Model 235) is a professional-grade Cordura nylon rope management system used by fire departments, technical rescue teams, SAR units, and industrial rope access technicians to transport, protect, and deploy life safety rope in field operations.

The bag is engineered to hold 250 to 300 feet of 1/2-inch (12.7mm) life safety rope as a primary load, or 200 to 250 feet of 5/8-inch (16mm) rope as an alternate configuration. Its Cordura nylon body shields the rope from abrasion, UV degradation, moisture, and dirt during transport and staging. A #5 bottom grommet serves as both an anchor point for the bag end of the rope and a drainage port when stowing wet rope. The drawstring cinch closure secures the load during movement and blocks debris from entering the bag between deployments.

Deployment protocol supports two field-ready methods depending on operational context. Controlled payout keeps the bag stationary while the working end is pulled manually, which is the correct method for building anchors and short-distance rigging. The throwing method secures the working end to an anchor, then uses an underhand throw so the bag's weight pulls the rope free for rapid, full-length deployment. Both methods require the working end to be positioned at the top of the bag during loading.

A critical operator requirement: the bag, handle, and fabric are not load-bearing components and must never be integrated into a rescue system as an anchor or structural element. Only the rope itself, anchored through the grommet, is a valid connection point. Rope inspection protocols per NFPA 1983 remain mandatory regardless of bag condition.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE BAG: Conduct a visual and tactile inspection of the entire bag before loading. Confirm the #5 bottom grommet is firmly seated and free of deformation, verify handle stitching is intact at all attachment points, and check the fabric body for tears, punctures, or significant abrasion that would expose the rope to direct contact.

2. ANCHOR THE ROPE THROUGH THE GROMMET: Take the bag end of the rope and feed it from the outside of the bag through the bottom grommet to the inside. This direction of feed is mandatory for correct stopper knot function and end-of-line indication.

3. TIE THE STOPPER KNOT: Tie a permanent, bulky stopper knot inside the bag at the bag end of the rope. A Figure-Eight on a Bight is the recommended knot. The finished knot must be larger in diameter than the grommet opening so it cannot pull through under load.

4. PACK THE ROPE WITHOUT COILING: Stuff the rope into the bag using an open hand, allowing it to flake in randomly. Do not coil the rope. Coiling induces twist and rope memory that causes tangles and deployment failure in the field.

5. POSITION THE WORKING END AT THE TOP: Continue stuffing until the full rope length is inside the bag. The working end must be the last section loaded, positioned at the top of the bag for immediate access on deployment.

6. SECURE AND LABEL THE BAG: Cinch the drawstring closure tight and confirm the locking mechanism is seated. Label the bag with rope specifications (for example, 300 ft 1/2-inch Static Kernmantle, Rescue Main) and the most recent inspection date.

7. TRANSPORT TO THE OPERATIONAL ZONE: Carry the bag by the 1.5-inch webbing handle to the hot zone. Place it on a stable, clear surface with the drawstring opening accessible.

8. OPEN AND LOCATE THE WORKING END: Open the drawstring closure and locate the working end at the top of the bag. Confirm the rope is ready to pay out without obstruction before selecting a deployment method.

9. EXECUTE DEPLOYMENT (METHOD A, CONTROLLED PAYOUT): For building anchors or short-distance deployment, pull the working end from the bag manually while the bag remains stationary. The rope will pay out smoothly without tangling.

10. EXECUTE DEPLOYMENT (METHOD B, THROWING): Secure the working end to an anchor point or maintain a firm grip on it. Verify the target area and the entire throw path are clear of all personnel, then throw the bag underhand. The bag's weight will pull the rope from the opening for rapid, full-length deployment.
