Quick Overview

The R&B "The Original" Turnout Gear Bag is a high-capacity PPE transport system used by firefighters, rescue technicians, and industrial safety operators to consolidate, isolate, and safely move complete structural turnout ensembles between incidents, apparatus, and station facilities.

The bag's primary operational function is contamination control. Once post-incident gear is loaded, the bag contains soot, carcinogens, particulates, and biohazards, preventing cross-contamination of vehicles, living quarters, and clean station areas. The Cordura nylon body resists abrasion across apparatus floors and concrete, while remaining water-resistant for short-duration transport. This bag is a contamination transport tool, not a decontamination solution. The bag itself must be treated as contaminated after use and processed through its own decontamination protocol.

The load-bearing system is engineered for the weight demands of a full turnout ensemble, which regularly exceeds 50 lbs. The 2-inch wide webbing handles run in a continuous loop around the bottom of the bag, distributing load across the webbing structure rather than the seams. This design prevents catastrophic handle failure during field transport. The 4,200 cubic inch main compartment accommodates a complete ensemble including coat, pants, boots, and helmet, while the exterior zippered pocket segregates smaller contaminated items such as hoods and extrication gloves.

The YKK No. 10 self-repairing zipper serves as the primary closure mechanism. Its heavy-gauge construction maintains securable closure under dirt, grit, and moisture exposure. Minor tooth misalignments are corrected by cycling the slider, preserving bag integrity in adverse field conditions without requiring tools or replacement.

Field Application Steps

1. PREPARATION: Place the empty, fully unzipped bag on a stable surface or decon-designated area. Confirm the interior is clear of debris from any previous use before loading begins.

2. LOAD BOOTS: Place boots sole-down at opposite ends of the bag's bottom interior. This establishes a stable, weighted base and prevents contaminant transfer from boot soles to other gear components stacked above.

3. LOAD BUNKER PANTS: Fold bunker pants in half and lay them flat across the boots, filling the space between them. Tuck all suspenders inward to prevent snagging during transport.

4. LOAD TURNOUT COAT: Fold the turnout coat lengthwise, sleeve to sleeve. Lay it flat on top of the pants. This orientation protects the collar and storm flap from compression damage.

5. STOW HELMET: Place the helmet dome-down into the natural cavity formed by the coat's collar area. If the helmet is fitted with an external face shield, orient it to minimize contact with zippers or metal hardware to prevent scratching.

6. SEGREGATE SMALL ITEMS: Place the hood, extrication gloves, and any other small contaminated items into the exterior zippered pocket. This step isolates priority cleaning items and prevents them from being lost in the main compartment.

7. SECURE AND TRANSPORT: Close the No. 10 YKK main zipper completely along its full length. Grasp both webbing handles and execute a two-handed lift using proper technique, legs driving the load, not the back. Do not drag the bag across surfaces for extended distances, as this degrades the Cordura body and shortens service life.
