Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Model 1245 Radio Chest Harness is a load-bearing platform designed to provide secure, hands-free radio carriage for field operators in wildland firefighting, search and rescue, incident command, and industrial operations requiring uninterrupted communication.

The Model 1245 positions a portable radio high and centered on the chest, which improves line-of-sight transmission and keeps communications equipment clear of pack straps, climbing harnesses, and belt-level obstructions. The harness accommodates common radio models including the Motorola APX and Kenwood TK series, with adjustable padded holster panels and an elastic retention cord for positive radio security during dynamic operations. An auxiliary front pouch provides rapid access to spare batteries, GPS units, or pagers, and an internal rear document pocket holds maps, ICS forms, or notepads flat against the chest.

Deployment readiness depends on disciplined fit and cable management. The shoulder and waist strap network distributes load across the operator's torso, and proper adjustment ensures the platform remains stable without restricting breathing or circulation. The speaker-microphone clips to a dedicated shoulder strap tab, with excess cabling routed through integrated elastic loops to eliminate snag hazards in dense brush, vehicle interiors, or technical rescue environments.

Sustained readiness requires pre-use inspection of webbing, stitching, hardware, and retention cord elasticity before every deployment. The harness must be hand-washed with mild soap and air-dried in a shaded, ventilated area. Any critical failure, including a torn load-bearing strap or broken buckle, requires the harness to be removed from service until professionally repaired or replaced.

Field Application Steps

1. INITIAL HARNESS FITTING: Don the empty harness over your head and confirm no straps are twisted. Secure the waist strap buckle and adjust all shoulder and waist straps until the platform sits high and centered on the chest, snug but not restricting breathing or circulation.

2. RADIO INSTALLATION AND SECURITY: Insert the radio into the main holster with the antenna oriented upward. Tighten the adjustable side panels to grip the radio body securely, then engage the elastic retention cord around the radio body below the control knobs. Confirm the cord does not interfere with the PTT button, antenna, or channel selector, then test retention by leaning forward and shaking moderately.

3. CABLE AND ACCESSORY ROUTING: Clip the speaker-microphone to the designated shoulder strap tab. Route the cable down the strap and secure excess length through the integrated elastic cable loops, leaving sufficient slack for full range of head motion without pulling on the cable or radio. Verify the PTT button is accessible with the non-dominant hand.

4. LOADING ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT: Place a spare battery, GPS unit, or pager into the front auxiliary pouch and secure its closure. Fold your map or notepad and slide it into the rear document pocket against the chest platform.

5. FINAL INTEGRATION AND FUNCTION CHECK: Don all additional required equipment, including pack, vest, or climbing harness, and make final micro-adjustments to ensure the harness does not interfere with other gear or restrict access to critical items. Conduct a radio check, turn your head fully left and right, reach for all pouches, and confirm every item is secure and accessible before departing.
