Quick Overview

The R&B RES-Q-PAK is an equipment consolidation and transport case used by Fire, Rescue, and EMS personnel to deploy a complete non-board spinal immobilization system, including a KED device, cervical collars, head immobilizers, and securing straps, as a single cohesive unit at trauma scenes.

The RES-Q-PAK solves a critical readiness problem in high-stress trauma response: component scatter. When a spine board is retrieved from the apparatus, the RES-Q-PAK travels with it, ensuring the full complement of immobilization tools arrives at the patient's side simultaneously. Its 36-inch linear profile is engineered to house a KED-type extrication device in full, unfolded length, preventing material stress and preserving operational readiness. The medical green nylon pack cloth body provides color-coded visual identification, reducing cognitive load during chaotic incident scenes.

Deployment protocol follows a deliberate sequence that supports both speed and patient safety. Cervical collars are packed on top for immediate access, while the KED device is staged on the bottom. Upon unzipping, the operator selects and sizes the collar first, applies it, then retrieves the KED for application per extrication protocols. Head immobilizer blocks and securing straps complete the immobilization sequence after the patient is transferred to the long spine board.

Post-incident recovery is a mandatory step in sustaining this capability. All used equipment, including the case itself, is considered contaminated and must not be repacked on scene. Segregation for terminal decontamination at station, followed by full inspection of every component, is required before the kit is returned to service. Inspection must also occur at the start of every operational shift.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT STAGING: Store the RES-Q-PAK in the designated apparatus compartment co-located with long spine boards. Stock the case with the KED device on the bottom, and head immobilizer blocks, cervical collars, and securing straps on top for immediate access.

2. SHIFT INSPECTION: At the start of every operational shift, inspect the case exterior for rips, tears, abrasions, or failing seams, and verify the zipper is fully functional with a clear track. Inspect the interior for contamination or embedded debris, then conduct a full contents inventory and condition check of all components including buckles, straps, Velcro, and cervical collars.

3. SCENE DEPLOYMENT: Assign one team member to retrieve the long spine board and a second to retrieve the RES-Q-PAK. Transport both to the immediate vicinity of the operation and place the case on a stable, clean surface such as a tarp or uninvolved roadway.

4. EQUIPMENT ACCESS: Unzip the case completely to make the entire inventory visible and accessible in a single action. Locate the cervical collars, which are packed on top for priority access.

5. CERVICAL COLLAR APPLICATION: Select and size the appropriate cervical collar for the patient. Apply the collar per your service's spinal immobilization protocol before proceeding to extrication device deployment.

6. KED DEVICE RETRIEVAL AND APPLICATION: Retrieve the KED-type extrication device from the bottom of the case. Apply the KED per established extrication protocols to immobilize the patient prior to removal from the vehicle.

7. LONG BOARD IMMOBILIZATION: After extrication onto the long spine board, retrieve the head immobilizer blocks and base from the case. Apply the head immobilizer and secure the patient with the spider straps or loop straps to complete full spinal immobilization.

8. POST-INCIDENT RECOVERY: Treat all used equipment, including the case, as contaminated. Do not repack on scene. Segregate the case and all used components for terminal decontamination at station using a service-approved disinfectant such as CaviCide. Do not use bleach, as it degrades the nylon fabric.

9. RETURN TO SERVICE INSPECTION: Inspect every component for damage, degradation, or contamination before restocking. Repack per the staging protocol with the KED on bottom and collars on top, then return the case to its designated apparatus compartment alongside the spine board.
