Quick Overview

The R&B RIT Equipment Bag (Model 887RD) is a professional-grade transport platform used by Rapid Intervention Teams to deploy supplemental SCBA cylinders and extrication tools into IDLH environments when a firefighter is downed or trapped.

The 887RD is built around three core capabilities: high-volume capacity, snag-resistant movement, and robust drag-ability. The 4,500 cubic inch main compartment accommodates full SCBA cylinders up to 60 minutes and large hydraulic tools. The 22 oz. red vinyl body supports effective decontamination after hazmat or biological exposure, and 3M Scotchlite reflective strips maintain operator visibility under zero-light conditions. The "Tuff Bottom" drag plate provides a rigid, low-friction primary ground contact surface engineered for movement across concrete, glass, and rebar without snagging.

Load security is a non-negotiable readiness requirement for this platform. Two internal heavy-duty webbing securing straps immobilize the primary load inside the main compartment. An unsecured SCBA cylinder or hydraulic tool becomes a projectile hazard during a fall or sudden stop, posing direct impact risk to the operator or victim. Proper strap tensioning must be verified by manual shift test before every deployment.

The deployment protocol moves through four sequential phases: pre-deployment configuration on the apparatus, transport to the structure entry point, low-profile ingress through the IDLH environment using the Tuff Bottom as the primary drag surface, and air delivery with extrication operations at the victim. The Rapid-Open Top Flap is designed for single-action access with gloved hands, providing immediate reach to the SCBA cylinder valve upon arrival at the downed firefighter.

Field Application Steps

1. OPEN AND CONFIGURE THE MAIN COMPARTMENT: Open the main compartment and place a full SCBA cylinder inside with the valve oriented toward the Rapid-Open Top Flap. This orientation is critical for immediate valve access when you reach the victim.

2. SECURE THE PRIMARY LOAD: Route both internal securing straps over the cylinder and tighten until zero movement is detectable in any direction. Perform a manual shift test before closing the bag.

3. STAGE ANCILLARY TOOLS: Load mission-essential tools into the two internal side pockets per your department's RIT load plan. Standard items include wire cutters, rescue webbing or harness, door wedges, and a search-line bag.

4. CLOSE AND STAGE THE BAG: Secure the Rapid-Open Top Flap fully and place the bag in its designated apparatus location. Confirm readiness as part of every shift inspection.

5. RETRIEVE AND TRANSPORT TO ENTRY POINT: Upon Mayday activation, retrieve the bag using the web carry handles and transport it to the structure's entry point. For longer clear-terrain distances, use an optional shoulder strap if equipped, or execute a two-person carry to conserve operator energy.

6. TRANSITION TO LOW-PROFILE INGRESS: At the entry point, immediately transition to a low profile and begin dragging the bag. Grip the web handles or drag strap and pull with the Tuff Bottom as the primary ground contact surface throughout movement.

7. NAVIGATE THE DEBRIS FIELD: Move through the IDLH environment maintaining continuous bag control. Drag around obstacles rather than lifting over them to conserve energy and reduce snagging risk.

8. ESTABLISH POSITION AT THE VICTIM: Position the bag adjacent to the downed firefighter and actuate the Rapid-Open Top Flap to expose the SCBA cylinder valve. Execute department protocols for supplemental air delivery, including trans-filling or facepiece swap as the situation requires.

9. ACCESS EXTRICATION TOOLS: Retrieve ancillary tools from the internal side pockets as required for disentanglement or extrication operations. Internal storage keeps these tools organized and immediately accessible without external snag risk during ingress.

10. CONDUCT AFTER-ACTION INSPECTION AND DECONTAMINATION: After the operation, empty all contents completely and decontaminate all surfaces per department SOP. Inspect all buckles, straps, webbing, and the Tuff Bottom for cuts, fraying, gouges, or chemical damage, and report any compromise to the shift officer before returning the bag to service.
