Quick Overview

The R&B Single Gripper Strap Hose Wrapper (SGS-2) is a load compression and carriage device used by fire service personnel to secure folded hose bundles into a dense, stable pack for transport through stairwells, narrow corridors, and wildland terrain.

The SGS-2 addresses a specific operational problem: hose bundles that snag, separate, or uncoil prematurely during transport degrade crew efficiency and delay deployment at the point of attack. The strap compresses accordion and horseshoe folds into a single solid block, accommodating 1.5", 1.75", and 2.5" hose diameters within an adjustable circumference range of 18 to 32 inches. Four integrated gripper handles provide mechanical advantage during compression and serve as balanced carry handles during transport.

Component design directly supports rapid deployment protocol. The full-length hook-and-loop closure releases with a single pull-action, removing the wrapper from the equation without tools or secondary steps. A 12-inch reflective strip sewn onto the strap body increases conspicuity in low-light and smoke-filled environments, supporting crew accountability and reducing trip hazards in active fire conditions. The nylon construction eliminates metal hardware, simplifying post-incident inspection.

Readiness sustainment requires keeping the closure free of mud, ice, and debris, as contamination significantly degrades hook-and-loop holding power and presents a bundle failure risk during transport. The strap must be air dried after washing and stored in an unfastened state to preserve closure integrity. This device is rated for equipment carriage only and is not approved for any life-safety or rescue application.

Field Application Steps

1. HOSE PACK PREPARATION: On a clean, flat surface, fold the required hose into the designated configuration for your operation, such as an Accordion or Denver Load. Confirm all couplings are properly aligned per department SOP before proceeding.

2. WRAPPER POSITIONING: Lay the SGS-2 flat with the reflective strip facing up. Center the hose bundle on top of the strap body so the load is evenly distributed across the full strap width.

3. INITIAL THREADING: Thread the free end of the strap through the leverage loop that allows the tightest initial fit around the bundle circumference. Confirm the strap is seated within the rated 18 to 32 inch circumference range before applying compression.

4. COMPRESSION AND SECURING: Grasp the gripper handles and pull forcefully, using body weight for maximum leverage. Continue until all trapped air is removed and the hose folds form a single, solid block, then press the hook-and-loop surfaces firmly together along the full length of the closure.

5. PRE-TRANSPORT CONFIRMATION: Lift the pack using the gripper handles and confirm it is stable and balanced with no shifting or separation. Verify the closure is fully engaged before moving.

6. TRANSPORT THROUGH CONSTRICTED ENVIRONMENTS: Carry the pack through the stairwell or corridor keeping it oriented to minimize its profile. Avoid contact with railings, door frames, and other protrusions that could snag the bundle or compromise the closure.

7. RAPID DEPLOYMENT: Place the pack on the floor at the deployment point. In a single decisive motion, pull the strap open to release tension, then remove the wrapper completely and clear it from the immediate area. The hose is now ready to be flaked out and charged.
